Vols to give Fulmer a 7-year extension

Phillip Fulmer's wife and kids have asked him the question. Tennessee fans ask all the time. And just last week, recruits asked him directly about it. How long will he be UT's head football coach? On Saturday, he got to the point. "I think it's a fair question when you start closing in on 20 years," Fulmer said, driving home from UT's annual high school football camp. "As long as I enjoy it, and as long as we continue to have success, I'm committed for another eight to 10 years. At least." Reassuring words for his backers. Scary words for his detractors. But Fulmer's comments are particularly timely. He currently makes $2.05 million a year and is in his 16th full season as UT's head coach. In the coming days, Fulmer will get a big raise. His total compensation package is expected to be between $2.6 million and $3 million. And if the whispers are true, he will receive a seven-year extension, the longest of his career. "It's never been about money; it's never been about fame," Fulmer said. "I just enjoy the job." -- Tennessean

You must be joking I can't believe that they would give him that kind of a deal considering that since they won a NC in what was it 98 Football has been falling off a bit in wins and recruiting not the power house they once was.

Maybe so cause I am sure that Fat Phill doesn't want to lose top recruits again to Alabama like last year.

Re: Vols to give Fulmer a 7-year extension

I love when people trot out the "it's been 10 WHOLE YEARS since they won a National Title!" argument to bash Fulmer.

When's the last time Frank Beamer won a National Title? Joe Paterno? Steve Spurrier? Do we doubt that these men are great coaches too?

Fulmer's winning percentage is third in Vols history behind just Robert Neyland and John Barnhill. He's the first UT coach since Neyland to win a consensus National Title. He's only has one losing season at Tennessee (2005) and had taken them to 16 straight bowl games at one point in his career. Among all coaches with a minimum of 10 years experience, he still has the highest winning percentage in the country.

Oh, yeah, and he was 10-4 last year. Can you're beloved Nick Saban say that?

Re: Vols to give Fulmer a 7-year extension

Fulmer has done many great things at Tenn... But a 7 yr. extension?!! I think when his contract was up, Tenn. should have given him a nice office job and gone with a younger, more aggressive coach and a better recruiter that appeals to kids.
As good of a coach as he is, they (Tenn. under Fulmer) will not be able to compete with Florida or Georgia for the next 7 years. I don't think he will be there 7 years from now.... Not in the SEC.

Re: Vols to give Fulmer a 7-year extension

People in Alabama love Phil Fulmer he does just good enough to keep his job. As to the Nick Saban comment come on... I remember him beating the fire out of Tennesse last season. Heck even Shula won 6-3 [one of my alltime favorite games] So it really comes down to this we agree Phil is a good coach however a great coach evens things up with his bitter rivals. So I wouldn't call Phil a great coach but he is just fine for Tennesee even if he is a snitch.

Yeah I'm a big Vols fan,but not a Fulmer fan ,I feel since he won the National Championship Phil has become complacent and feels he already has reached the peak of his profession so why even try any more.
GO VOLS!!!!

Re: Vols to give Fulmer a 7-year extension

I'm happy for all the Tennessee fans out there now that there is no question about Fulmer being fired.

I would love to have confidence in continuity for a head coach at Alabama. Now players, fans and recruits can be confident in who will be in charge.
