Pat Summit will be the first women's basketball coach to earn a $1 million annual salary after agreeing to a new six-year deal with Tennessee today. Several years late, I might add, considering that she is tops among all NCAA basketball coaches with 913 career wins and has taken the Vols to six National Championships. She is now the second highest paid coach at the University, behind only football coach Phillip Fulmer. Thoughts?

Good for her. The Univeristy wouldn't pay her that kind of money unless she brought at least that much into the school....How about her for the Knicks?

Kenvol, not directed at you but you did get me to thinking about all the previous discussions all over the web that Pat's not getting paid enough.

Somehow I think that Coach Summitt isn't groveling and making bad deals with the University. She got a deal that was satisfactory or she wouldn't do the deal. She could write her own ticket as a TV commentator, a motivational speaker... tinker, tailor.. whatever. And we know she could probably get another coaching job but I get the feeling that she's only wanting to coach the Lady Vols.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure that she's in a position of power when negotiating a contract. She's a big girl and can take care of herself.

I'd expect this was a win for UT, Pat, the Lady Vols & fans everywhere.

It does make one wonder though, Ross -- some far inferior men's coaches are being paid more. All things being equal, meaning none of the obvious discrepencies between mens and womens sports existed, what kind of salary do you think Pat Summitt would command? I should think Larry Brown-ish figures, easily, based on coaching merit. Am I wrong?

It's all a Supply and Demand thing lefty. Coaches get paid by what the market will bare at any given time.

Ok im gonna be as honset as possible. I think that Tennessee did this a tad bit to late. Pat Summitt earn this years back. She has kept her team in the top 5 for as long as i can remeber. She has more wins as a college coach and that goes for both men and women. I think that after they named the court after her i think she should have gotten this well deserved pay increase but hey i dont know what the AD was thinking hey maybe they didnt think that she deserved it at the time but her track record speaks for its self and its speaks vloumes

Welcome aboard Lora...It probably has more to do with the ability to generate revenue then just a won/lost/championship thing...
