UT defense concentrates on stopping quarterback
KNOXVILLE — Tennessee defensive end Robert Ayers has an idea on how to stop Louisiana-Lafayette's high-powered running game.
It all starts with Ragin' Cajuns senior quarterback Michael Desormeaux, the nation's leading rusher among quarterbacks and the only one averaging 100 yards or more on the ground.
"If you stop him," Ayers said, "you stop their offense."
In the case of Tennessee's defense, it might be easier said than done.
The 24th-ranked Vols (5-3), who welcome Louisiana-Lafayette (1-7) to Neyland Stadium for homecoming Saturday, haven't had much luck in recent years slowing down running quarterbacks like Desormeaux.
