| Ayers tackles the biggest hurdle to his success KNOXVILLE — Defensive end Robert Ayers was searching for the correct answer. Then, it hit him. The Tennessee defensive end was asked what one thing has been holding him back, the thing that has kept him from becoming the force many expected him to be. ![]() OAS_AD('300x250_1'); http://gcirm.tennessean.gcion.com/Re...630?_RM_EMPTY_ on error resume next MM_FlashCanPlay = ( IsObject(CreateObject("ShockwaveFlash.ShockwaveFla sh." & MM_contentVersion)))![]() His answer: "Me." Ayers, a junior, came to UT as one of the most recruited players in the nation. After redshirting in 2004, he had back-to-back disappointing seasons and the frustration level with him and his coaches was getting high. Now, everything is starting to click. Although Ayers has yet to earn a starting spot, he is tied for third in Southeastern Conference in sacks (three) and is alone at third in tackles for losses (6.5). "He was one of those who was always just better than everybody," said UT Coach Phillip Fulmer, recalling when Ayers first got to campus. "He just didn't have a great work ethic. That's the truth. It's been a battle. He's not the only one. It's just unusual to have someone that is that gifted that doesn't have the work ethic. He's doing it now. He really understands better. He's matured."
