| Tennessee Vols' Freshman Berry practices at safety instead of corner KNOXVILLE — The Eric Berry experiment has officially started. Tennessee's highly touted true freshman defensive back worked with the safeties during Monday's practice after spending the majority of the offseason as a cornerback. When asked if Berry could make the switch in time for the Vols' home opener against Southern Mississippi on Saturday, UT Coach Phillip Fulmer said, "We're looking at that."The timing came two days after UT's 45-31 loss at Cal. Fulmer said he was "disappointed" with the play of the safeties, most notably free safety Jonathan Hefney and strong safety Jarod Parrish. If Fulmer makes the switch, Berry would move into Parrish's position. Parrish did have three solo tackles and one for a loss, but a lack of speed and missed tackles plagued the senior. Berry played cornerback and some safety on Saturday. Fulmer said Berry played as well as anyone in the secondary. Freshman Berry practices at safety instead of corner
