Fulmer and the Vols working South Carolina
GatorBait.net (subscription), FL - 5 hours ago
Last week, we made mention in the war room that head coach Phillip Fulmer had been working the state of South Carolina on the recruiting front, but he had some help as assistants Dan Brooks and Matt Luke were in the Palmetto State and all three coaches found their way to Charlston to visit with one of the state's best in defensive in Robert Quinn.

A Closer Look at the Class: Savion Frazier

A Closer Look at the Class: Savion Frazier

One of the most traditional and entertaining aspects of the recruiting process, at least from a fans' point of view, is following those players termed as 'sleepers' that invariably turn up in every class. Virginia's Savion Frazier is a player who some might say fills that role in a Tennessee class that was dotted with big-names and high-school All-Americans.
Frazier (6-foo-0, 209 pounds) was barely on the radar at all when he gave Tennessee an early commitment in the fall, and his relatively low-profile on the recruiting front qualifies him as a bona-fide sleeper candidate.
The Tennessee staff liked the all-around athlete enough to offer him a scholarship at the tail-end of his junior year though, and the Volunteer defensive coaches hope that Frazier will follow in a long line of high school running backs who made the transition into speedy outside linebackers at the college level.
"That's one of the things I liked about Tennessee, they had a definite plan for me early in the process. They saw what I could do and told me that they thought I had a future as a linebacker," Frazier said. "It didn't matter to me where I played in college. I played everywhere in high school on defense, and running back on offense. I sort of thought I'd have a better chance to make it as a linebacker all the time, so defense is cool with me."
Frazier found out early on about the tradition started in Knoxville by players like Eric Westmoreland, Dominique Stevenson, Eddie Moore and even Al Wilson, guys who were wildly productive high school running backs before they were drafted out of Tennessee as linebackers.
"Coach Chavis told me that he's taken a lot of guys like me, running backs in high school, and made them into linebackers," Frazier said. "I know a lot of those guys made it o the pros to. It was cool to hear them say that they thought I was that same kind of player."
The Woodbridge, Va. native will arrive in Knoxville in July for the second session of summer school.
Here are a few questions with incoming Vol Savion Frazier.
Do you have a nickname?
I actually don't, I'm one of the few guys I know without one.
Was there one single thing about Tennessee that turned the tide, that made the decision easy for you?
I liked Tennessee from the start, even before I went down there. They were the first school to offer me, and after that they were always pretty much my leader. I went down there for the spring game my junior year, and what stood out the most to me was the coaches and the stadium.
I was expecting the stadium to be big, but I wasn't really prepared for it. I can't wait to play in it. That probably stood out the most to me.
Are you a superstitious player, any pre-game rituals?
I don't have anything I do consistent, but if we won and I had a good game one week I'd do the same things the next week, keep the same routine, where the same t-shirt under my pads, that kind of thing.
When did you first realize that you were going to have a shot at playing major college football in a conference like the SEC?
I knew I was going to have a chance in my 10th grade year. My high school coach got a call from Miami asking about me and another player on my team. They were calling because they actually thought I was a year older than I was and they wanted to start recruiting me. That motivated me to work even harder and take advantage of the chance.
What would you pick as the highlight from your senior season?
Just the whole season was a highlight. We had been struggling for the last couple of years but we turned it around a little this year and got into the playoffs. It was actually crazy because after our last game they told us that we didn't make it, but on Sunday morning they called and we found out we had won a tie-breaker to get in. That was the best part for me, just sort of getting things going in the right direction.
If you could pick any three people to go to dinner with and spend the evening with, who would you pick?
I'd have to have my girlfriend there. Emmit Smith, my favorite NFL player of all-time and my uncle. He's older than me, but he's my best friend, just a guy who's always there for me, trying to help me out.
Was the decision to by-pass Virginia Tech, a school much closer to home, and pick Tennessee a tough one for you?
Not really, Tennessee really recruited me the hardest, and offered me first like I said. I have a lot of family in the South, in Alabama especially, so it wasn't a real hard decision. It was really easy after I came down there the first time. I loved everything about the place, the campus is great, but I liked the town, the people, everything.
I actually tried to commit to the coaches right when the first offered me, before my senior year even started but they told me to take some time and think about it, that there was no rush.

Post Vols, Blue Devils, and More Targeting NC Prep Stars

Several reports and sources have stated that lineman Andrew Wallace has put the Tennessee Volunteers at the top of his list. According to Wallace himself, his top five include Tennessee, NC State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Maryland - but he also added that Tennessee was on top at the moment. Wallace is expected to make a decision by the end of the summer.

Re: Tennessee Voulenteer 2008 Prospects

Kinston, North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples was rolling through the drive-thru Tuesday when he visited with Volquest.com. His order was two double cheeseburgers, two french fries, and a tea as the 6-foot-7, 242 pound defensive end is eating with a mission.

Re: Tennessee Voulenteer 2008 Football Prospects

Look out for 6'7" 265-pound walk-on Tyler Beaudoin at defensive end for the Vols in '08. Ex-marine from Maine with tremendous upside.
