Tennessee has won the past two Southeastern Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament championships.
When the annual event begins Thursday in Duluth, Ga., the other 11 league teams will again be chasing the Lady Vols.
“The mountaintop is still orange,” Ole Miss coach Carol Ross said.
UT, ranked No. 2 nationally, defeated Vanderbilt on Sunday to wrap up a 14-0 run through the SEC for the first time since 2004.
Defense has been Tennessee’s strength. It leads the SEC in defensive field-goal percentage and limited Vanderbilt to a season-low 32.7 percent Sunday.
“We may have played our best basketball against Vanderbilt,” Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt said. “Hopefully we can carry some of that momentum into this tournament.”
Tennessee features the SEC’s leading scorer in Candace Parker (20.6 ppg.), the leading candidate for league Player of the Year honors.
“They are the favorite, no question about that,” Ross said. “The rest of us are showing up trying to have our moment in the sun. That’s the nature of tournament play. That’s what makes it so fun and exciting.”
