Fulmer's Last Chance

Story by Dennis Dodd at CBS Sportsline gives Coach Fulmer down the road for throwing his players under the bus when he blamed UT's problems on lack of ability.
http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/9276295

We all know Fulmer has won a buncgh of games but it seems we're in a pretty long downward spiral. The loss to Vandy and missing a bowl game are just inexcusable for the caliber ball we fans expect from the Volunteers.

So he gets rid of Randy Sanders like the most vocal fans have been calling for over the past...oh 20 years or so. Coach Cut is back with no more Mannings in the pipeline but a Clausen supposedly a lock. Can they turn it around this year?

What's the record need to be for the Vols 2006 football team? I'm thinking a 4 or 5 win season means a new head coach will be on the way.

Re: Fulmer's Last Chance

Yeah, the honeymoon is definitely over for Mr. Fulmer. That National Title is ancient history. Coaching is a "what have you done for me lately?" kind of business, and ol' Phil just isn't getting the job done. Just getting to a bowl isn't enough. He needs to get to a halfway decent one and then win it. Otherwise, I think he's out the door.

Re: Fulmer's Last Chance

He should have been gone 8 years ago. He is a lousy coach. I think Cutt is not much better. I almost hope for a bad season just to get a good coach in there.

Re: Fulmer's Last Chance

well, i dont know whats wrong with u guys. fulmer isnt the greatest coach, but he is a great recruiter and that has kept him near the top for the last few years. he has had 1 losing season and u are after his job. look at some other coaches that had bad years then returned to have good seasons after that. the first one that comes to mind is paterno and bowden. now phil is not near as good as those guys, but none the less he has won his fair share of games. if they can him and we end up on a coaching carousel it might be years before they ever have a good season (example:bama).
oh, and u guys that dont think cutcliffe is any good either need to go do some research. tn averaged over 33 points a game with him at the offensive helm. if they would have averaged that this year the only game they would have lost would have been to ND. also if cutcliffe isnt any good then why would charlie weiss have hired him as his offensive coordinator before cut. had to step down cause of a heart attack. he will not be a miracle worker, but he will certainly help them. they will get things turned around this year, im sure of it. but in the end, the results will be played on the field and everyone will know.

Re: Fulmer's Last Chance

With all of Fulmers talent he sure should have won a few more Championships. He is the equal of Larry Finch when he was at Memphis. He could recruit but not coach. Not one player got better under Finch and Fulmer is about the same. The worst thing would be if they fire Fulmer then they would probable hire Cutt as the coach. God help us.
