Outback Bowl: Vols vs. Penn State

Tennessee accepted an invitation Sunday to play Penn State in the Outback Bowl on New Year's Day in a matchup of teams tied for third all-time with 24 bowl victories. Tennessee's trip to Tampa marks the Vols' second appearance in the Outback Bowl and 46th bowl invitation, a figure that ranks second all-time. The Vols defeated Boston College 38-23 in the January 1993 Outback Bowl. That game was Phillip Fulmer's first official contest as head coach of the Volunteers.

Tennessee vs. Penn State? Oh, I like this one. Of course, the Vols look to have an advantage, but don't count JoePa's crew out. So how do you guys figure this one will turn out?

I am gonna go with Paterno's Nittany Lions here. I dont know why, but I have a feeling its going to be pretty exciting and Penn State is going to play a tough game against the Vols and squeak out a win.

Re: Outback Bowl: Vols vs. Penn State

I haven't seen Penn State play this year but if they play hard nose football like they used to. We could be in trouble. I'm still pulling for the Vols but we could have a game on our hands.

Tennessee's offense looking to recapture magic in bowl
Kingsport Times News, TN - 18 hours ago
Tennessee's passing game lost some of its oomph midway through the season, however. Ainge injured his ankle on a quarterback draw late in the Vols' win at South Carolina.

Ainge tried to go against LSU, but lasted just one quarter before giving way to Jonathan Crompton. He sat out the entirety of the Vols' 31-14 loss to Arkansas.

And while UT piled up points and stats against Vanderbilt, the Vols had to struggle to beat a Kentucky team that ranked among the worst defenses in all of Division I-A.

Tennessee's Outback Bowl opponent, Penn State, which ranks 16th in total defense and 11th in scoring defense, will provide a much tougher test than the Wildcats.

Which begs the question: Can Tennessee recapture the magic?

Vols Arrive In Tampa For Outback Bowl

The Tennessee Volunteers arrived safely in Tampa for the 2007 Outback Bowl against Penn State on Jan. 1. The Vols enjoyed Christmas dinner prior to an initial short team meeting and a night of getting acclimated to the warm and muggy weather following a day of thunderstorms that passed through the area earlier in the day.

Ainge is playing, right? Good as he has been, can be overcome the Penn State defense?

Speed, Power Play Part In Success Of Vols, Nittany Lions
The Chattanoogan, TN - 10 hours ago
TAMPA, Fla. — Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer said Wednesday he’s not a believer in any sort of stereotype when it comes to Southeastern Conference football versus the Big Ten Conference. The Vols meet Penn State here Monday in the 21st Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.

“You watch Penn State on defense and they’re really fast,” Fulmer said. “They are the No. 5 scoring defense in the country and 16th overall — you don’t do that without being really good in all phases. And on offense, their receivers run away from people.”

The so-called “book” on each conference has been speed in the SEC countered by power football from the Big Ten. Tennessee has won three straight bowl games against the Big Ten — wins over Ohio State, Northwestern and Michigan — to improve to 6-4 all-time against the current conference lineup.

Fulmer says it took a combination of power and speed to prevail in all three of those wins.

“A huge concern for us in this game is to stop the run and on the other side be able to run some against them, to have some sort of balance in our offense,” Fulmer said. Regarding any stereotypes, “I think that’s something that’s just fun to talk about but not relevant.”

Vols Face Tough Test With Penn State In Outback Bowl

The Penn State Nittany Lions defense will be facing a Tennessee offense that features the SEC's second-best passing attack. Receiver Robert Meachem has turned in possibly the best season in school history with a school-record 1,265 yards and 11 touchdowns as he became the first Tennessee receiver to earn All-America status since Carl Pickens in 1991.

Well, the game's less than 1 1/2 hours away. Any last predictions?

Re: Outback Bowl: Vols vs. Penn State

Corso & Herbstreit both picked the Vols so that makes me worried. Lee said it'll be the lowest scoring game of the day & the 1st 2 series looks like he may be onto something.

Joe Pa's up in the pressbox for the game today.

I'm hoping for a great game and a last minute win by the Vols.

So far, he looks to be right. 3-3 right now, late in the second quarter, but a nice run just now by Penn State's Tony Hunt.

Vols Drop Outback Bowl, 20-10

Tennessee tried to rally late, but three turnovers proved to be too costly as an 86-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Penn State's Tony Davis was the difference in a defense struggle on a soggy and rainy gridiron in Southwest Florida, as the Nittany Lions defeated the No. 17 Volunteers, 20-10, in the Outback Bowl at Raymond James Stadium.

Chalk one up for the Big Ten over the SEC. Just like it'll be on the 8th.

Re: Outback Bowl: Vols vs. Penn State

I'm not really happy with how either side of the Vols played today but I'm pretty sure we would have won if we had that TD instead of PSU getting it.

PSU beat us 3-0 on turnovers so it would have been pretty dang tough to overcome that.

The PSU QB really played over his head. The scoop on him had been that he wasn't very good but he had a great game when it mattered.

Bret Smith being out really hurt us. Meach & Swain were ok but it's a different game whern there's 3 real threats at WR instead of just 2.

Ugh, just wait til next year.
