Blown call doesn't matter as Alabama edges Tennessee

The conspiracy theorists came out again Saturday after Alabama nose tackle/aircraft carrier Terrence Cody blocked a second field-goal attempt to secure the Crimson Tide's 12-10 win against Tennessee.

"He took his helmet off!" they screamed. "That's a 15-yard penalty! Tennessee should have gotten another kick!" (Agitated SEC and/or Bama haters typically use a lot of exclamation points.) ...............

........
Because Alabama blocked and recovered the ball, Alabama had possession. The game can't end on a defensive penalty, but because of the possession change, Alabama wasn't on defense. We'll let SEC spokesman Charles Bloom take it from here.

"The foul for taking helmet off is a live ball foul treated as a dead-ball foul," Bloom wrote in an e-mail Saturday night. "That is, if it happens on a play where time does not expire then the penalty is enforced on the following play. However since the clock ran out on that play, then there is no next play, so there is no penalty to mark off."

Still, only a week after an Arkansas-Florida debacle that got an SEC crew suspended for three weeks, the conference could ill afford for another crew to miss such a clear call. It would have been nice if an official could have flagged Cody. Then referee Matt Austin could have explained to a national television audience why, despite the penalty on Cody, the game was still over.

Re: Blown call doesn't matter as Alabama edges Tennessee

i think the game was over , tennessee had plenty of chances and didn't come thru. alabama wanted it more. my hat is off to alabama for a hard fought win. what can you say this is sec football. i saw both games that the sec refs were suspended for. the gators may have lost if it wasn't for the calls on that last drive. the ga. and lsu game was terrible towards the end. i hope the officals were fined too.going back to the tennessee and alabama game how did tennessee fans feel about the ref help on the running play that ingram was stopped short on because the ref was in the way. ingram would have gotten the first down or more. i know the officals are considered part of the field but tennessee lucked out on that play. i think alabama at least mr. cody wanted it more great play x 2. i'm a big guy too it makes me feel good that a big guy can come thru like that.i hop e alabama has fl. number this year but first put lsu in their place.
