Erik Ainge threw for 333 yards and No. 11 Tennessee held off Air Force when Xavier Mitchell stuffed a late two-point conversion try by the Falcons to give the Volunteers a 31-30 victory Saturday in Knoxville, Tenn.
``I think they came in here to win the game,'' Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer said. ``It was their call. If they made it, they would have been heroes.''
Air Force Coach Fisher DeBerry said he decided to go for two before the final touchdown because, ``We came here to win. You don't want to mess around with overtime in this stadium.''
Air Force cut it to 31-24 with 2:41 left and then recovered the onside kick. The Falcons scored on Ryan Williams' 1-yard run to cut the lead to a point with less than two minutes to play, but failed on the try.


So what's up with this?...the Vols kill California and Struggle aganist Air Force?...Is this team a lot weaker than the victory over Cali seem to indicate?...will this Ainge kid be draft worthy?

Same thing happened to Tennessee that happened to Florida State - both teams were fresh off big wins and wound up taking their opponents lightly. Then when Air Force/Troy got their confidence up and realized they could play with their ranked opposition, both games wound up being dogfights. Give credit to the Falcons too, though - they always play tough.

Granted...still...if you are nationally ranked there should be enough pride in that to go out there and try to destroy whom ever lines up against you, knowing that a lose or two and that coveted ranking is gone.

I think the Vols are as good as they looked in the Cali game but something to remember...Air Force runs a KILLER triple option. That package is almost impossible to stop if run correctly and Air Force runs in correctly. TN was not ready for that level of execution and thus had a hard time but it also showed they will they have to win. The test is this weekend UT vs UF. GO VOLS!!!!
