KNOXVILLE — Tennessee fans begging for a new quarterback got their wishes Saturday evening. When the Vols broke the huddle for the first snap of their game with Auburn, Nu'Keese Richardson was at quarterback.Right on cue, Richardson took the shotgun snap, sprinted to his right and then cut back for a 41-yard gain.
Alas, it was all an illusion, a gimmick play to get the ball into the hands of one of UT's talented freshmen. After that, Jonathan Crompton took over at quarterback.
Uh-oh. As we have found out all too often over the last two seasons, this is a losing proposition for the Vols.
Right or wrong, Crompton has become the symbol for UT's shortcomings. In an era when quality quarterback play is essential for success in college football, Crompton simply doesn't measure up.
It was the same story against Auburn. Despite a fourth-quarter uptick that included a too-little, too-late scoring pass as the clock hit zero, Crompton presided over UT's 26-22 loss.
"We had a few big plays," said UT Coach Lane Kiffin, "but we never got into a rhythm on offense."
It is telling that many left Neyland Stadium feeling cautiously optimistic about the Vols offense, thanks to the late splurge. But this was fool's gold. Auburn backed off down the stretch. Upcoming opponents like Georgia and Alabama will not be so inclined.

You guys are right. Crompton is not a great qb. As a matter of fact we don't have much talent at all on the team right now. But we keep taking #1 teams into the last minutes of the game or maybe a block kick or 2. Just think what we could do if we had some talent. O wait, Fulmer is gone!! Sounds like you guys better get your talking in now. The sleeping gaint is on his way back!! Bet you guys were hoping Fulmer would stay for 20 more years. The new mouth of the south is on the hill now. Watch out boys!!!!
