NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans wanted to create competition by signing veteran quarterback Kerry Collins. They've already succeeded in stirring up the man who thought he would be the starter.

Collins practiced Tuesday for the first time since signing a one-year deal with the Titans on Monday. Billy Volek said that because Vince Young also needs more reps, the snaps Collins took came from Volek's share of the work.

"They brought Kerry in here to learn the offense, and he needs reps. They're going to take them from me," Volek said.

The six-year veteran was given the starting job when Steve McNair was traded away in June. Now Volek doesn't sound very happy at the prospect that he hasn't done enough to earn the job despite throwing for more yards in his first 10 NFL starts than any other quarterback since 1970.

Volek hasn't looked sharp in preseason. If he looked like he was gonna be the Titans starting quarterback, maybe we don't pick up Kerry Collins. On the other hand, even if Volek was another spawn of Archie & Olivia, I'd want to have another capable QB on hand in case Billy went down. Besides Vince Young, I mean.

Ross is 100% right on this one - I caught a replay of this week's Titans game on NFL Network yesterday, and Volek looked terrible. Kept missing open receivers, throwing behind guys in the flat, etc. The kid had the starting job just handed to him, and he hasn't been good enough to deserve it really. Not sure why it looks like there's so much rust on him, but Collins will be a good insurance policy if and when Volek starts to struggle when the games count.

I am a Titans fan, and I don't think this move will really help the team out a whole lot. We don't have the talent to compete for a few years now, so I don't think it helps to sign old veterans. Personally, I think Lienart or Cutler would have been better draft picks too.
