Former NFL fullback and current ESPN analyst Merril Hoge has been steadfast in his insistence that Tennessee quarterback Vince Young will never come close to living up to the promise the Titans thought he had when they chose him with the third pick in the 2006 draft.

Today I saw Hoge at ESPN's Super Bowl headquarters in Scottsdale, and I asked him whether he thinks Young could succeed in the offense that new coordinator Mike Heimerdinger will install in Tennessee.

"There's not an NFL offense that Vince Young can succeed in throwing the ball," Hoge said. "Maybe there's an offense where he can succeed running the ball, and maybe he can throw some bubble screens, but pretty soon any NFL defense is going to stop a running games and the bubble screens."

I asked Hoge whether he felt personally vindicated when Young followed up his Pro Bowl rookie season with a nine-touchdown, 17-interception second season.

"I really don't have an agenda when I evaluate a player," Hoge said. "I've spent almost 20 year studying tape as a player and an analyst and I see that he just doesn't do the things a quarterback has to do. He's still the same player he was coming out of college, a good athlete but not a good quarterback. You should see improvement by the time a guy has started 30 games, but I've seen none."

As for the firing of former Titans offensive coordinator Norm Chow, Hoge said, "That's what a draft bust does to your franchise."

the reason i didn't comment on the last post concerning Merril Hoge's comments is simply because i think the guy is an ass...

its that simple...i don't know what is problem is exactly, but since we took Vince in the draft all he has done is bad mouth in and the team, he couldn't even act like a man after Vince's rookie season and say "i was wrong he is good"

now i dont know whether he had a bet that Leinart would go higher in the draft...maybe he is upset that he was only an NFL fullback and never the kind of player Vince is...or something like that, but he seems to be gunning for Vince all the time.

WE all know Vince is a good player, he has only finished his second season with a poor set of offensive weapons and he needs to have his edges ironed out

and what kind of moron makes a comment like "well thats what a draft bust does to a team" what the hell is he talking about..would he prefer we drafted Cutler or Leinart??

i think this guy is a ridiculous analyst because even though some analysts may be biased...they are in no way as biased as this idiot is

thats what a draft bust does to a team? im confused he goes to the probowl his rookie year and than goes to the playoffs in his sophmore year what else can he do with the talent around him with an offensive cordinator that publicly critisized him and force VY to throw.i believe he got to the rose bowl because of his ability to run and he won the rose bowl because of his ability to run we made that great comeback against the giants because of his ability to run he went to the probowl because of his ability to run and norm chow took his ability to run and limited it so there goes VY ability to run and half his talent and lets face it that is why he strugled we didnt allow VY to do what he does best.
