NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Anyone curious to see how Vince Young has improved since he was last seen in the Pro Bowl must wait a week. While the Washington Redskins sure didn't miss him, the Titans obviously did.
Young sat on the sidelines, benched for violating a team rule. Without him, the Tennessee Titans lost their preseason opener on Saturday night.

But Young was the big attraction, coming off his Offensive Rookie of the Year award and the big reason the Titans expect to pick up where they left off after an excellent finish that left them a game short of the playoffs.

Titans coach Jeff Fisher refused to say why he sat Young except that he owed it to the quarterback not to say. Asked by a TV reporter what happened, Young warned children not to break the rules, but he reportedly stayed at home instead of the team hotel.

''I made a decision earlier today to not put Vince in the ball game for violating a team rule. Period. End of story. He'll be back in the building Monday with his teammates, practicing. He's our starting quarterback,'' Fisher said.

That left Young forced to watch wearing a baseball cap, blue T-shirt and shorts while holding onto a white towel around his neck. He kept his hands busy by often gripping each end of that towel, swinging his arms back and forth or just clasping them behind his back as he fidgeted on his feet.

A bit harsh for a rules violation?...not starting him should have been enough I think.

If I'm reading my morning paper right, all he did was stay at home instead of at the team hotel. Way too harsh for such a silly violation.

That's what I am saying...unless he didn't want to play him at all...you bench him for the first half and then throw him out there...point made.

Hell, just sit him out for the first series. That's how much college coaches do it.

i think in the situation the team has been in with Pacman they need to show that any kind of violation of team rules will incur a punishment. fair enough he may have stayed at home as opposed to the team hotel but players are meant to stay at the hotel to prepear for the games and help develop player bonds and all that rubbish and even though Vince may have prefered to stay at home he violated the rules...of course it was like SOME players where they may have gone to a strip club or to do a few drive-bys *cough* pacman *cough*

as long as it wasnt anything major im happy and ill be glad to see him on the field in the next game

Jimmy Johnson once cut a player for falling asleep in a meeting...they asked him if he would have done the same to Troy Aikman, and he said, "No, I would have probably nudged him awake."

This is your franchise player...a series or two benched would have been fine.

Jeffs probably making a statement early on that any violation will be punished, with albert stomping heads and pacman last season hes trying to nip it in the butt early..what vince did was minor but hes the leader and is held to a higher standard, this was just the first pre-season game, point made and he'll start the next game..

i think its pretty funny how the titans fans are pretty ok with him being suspended for this game where as everyone else is thinking it should have been for a series or a half or something ha ha

to be honest i think it was good for him to get banned for a game becuase lets face it, it was preseason and he would have only played a series or to anyway, had it been the regular season thats another story, but it was preseason so it was ok. but im not worrying to much about Vince getting upset and wanting to leave the team, he still young and mature and hes not like one of these players who thinks he is bigger than he is becuase he was a top 5 pick and thus he is 'above the law.' by mid week it will all blow over and everything will be back to normal, but if they drag this out for longer then we have a serious problem on our hands

Baby and I were surfing the channels trying to find a game we could agree on. (Baby is my 9 month old granddaughter) I saw Vince and could tell he was benched. Not a happy camper.
But come on, This is Jeff Fisher who had to deal with the Haynesworth thing and then the Pac Man saga. Vince missed a flight with the team and had to take a commercial flight once and he got into a scuffle on the field. Time to nip this in the bud and keep that young quarterback from getting a big head. Rules are rules and they apply to everyone and that is the point Fisher is making.

You reprimand in private...you don't just show up the QB for an entire game like that...a bit heavy handed.

ill say it like i did on another thread .... i think Fisher made the wrong move ..... like i said before, VY needs the reps against a real game situation, taking that away from him hurts everyone

I assume he was reprimanded in private before this. He seems to be making a habit of these little things. Apparently, talking to him didnt help.

imo you just dont take the live reps away from him ....... he is so young he needs the experience

He will get lots of reps the rest of the preseason. Experience isnt going to help him if he keeps getting into trouble and thats the direction he is headed. If it knocks some sense into him, then its worth it. Jeff Fisher knows his team better than we do and he thought this was the way to go.
