| Collins Talked With Cowboys This time last year, Kerry Collins was a quarterback without a job. When the Titans eventually signed him in late August, he kicked things into high gear and ended up starting the first three games before being replaced by Vince Young. At the end of the 2006 season, Collins wasn't sure he'd end up back in Tennessee. But without a starting job available, he ended up re-signing, and he'll back up Young again this fall. "I definitely kept an open mind going into the offseason,'' Collins said. "I talked to the Cowboys a little bit and there were some things that were attractive about that — I think every kid kind of dreams about playing for the Cowboys. "But all in all, I think at this stage of my career with the opportunities that were out there, this is the best fit for me and my career, but also for my family. And I still have a lot left in me from that standpoint.'' A 12-year veteran, Collins will be joined in practices next week with another veteran quarterback, Tim Rattay, who signed with the Titans earlier this week after playing previously with the Buccaneers and 49ers. Barring a surprise, however, Rattay's chances of making the team seem to hinge on whether the Titans want to keep a No. 3 QB on the roster this fall, something they didn't do last year. As for Collins, he's just happy to have an offseason around Baptist Sports Park. The Titans were 0-3 in his starts last season, but he had less than two weeks to prepare for the opener. "I have always believed in the value of offseason practice and minicamps and tried to really use them to get better. I didn't have that last year, so I am trying to take advantage of that this year and build on he things I got familiar with last year,'' said Collins, who completed 42 of 90 passes for 549 yards, one touchdown and six interceptions in '06. "And now there is no pressure. I came in here and there was a sizeable amount of pressure to learn it and get ready to play last year, and now the pressure is not there and I just have to get ready to play.'' So glad he stuck with the titans..that was a close call.. Collins is comfortable in role as backup QB - Nashville, Tennessee - Saturday, 05/12/07 - Tennessean.com |
