WR Update

Paul Williams knows he'll be tempted.
But he said he'll fight the urge the Titans' three drafted wide receivers are likely to face as they compete for roles at a position where the team has a lot of sorting out to do.

"Definitely you want to go out there and make the circus catch and do the impossible," he said. "In reality, you've got to do your assignments and the incredible will come. You want to go out there and do the incredible, but you can't."
Williams, a third-rounder out of Fresno State, said he quickly felt a bond with two other new Tennessee receivers, fourth-rounder Chris Davis from Florida State and sixth-rounder Joel Filani from Texas Tech.

The trio led the way among the receivers Friday in a rookie orientation practice, with Williams twice making nice catches in one-on-one drills with first-round defensive back Michael Griffin in coverage.
Short wait
Jeff Fisher's new wide receivers coach, Fred Graves, said he's excited about his new guys and has told them immediately that they are not in position to have to wait behind veterans.
Drew Bennett and Bobby Wade left as free agents. David Givens is not expected to be ready to start the season after a serious knee operation during last season.
While Brandon Jones has done some things to establish himself, the rest of the veteran pool at the position is unproven: Roydell Williams has 29 catches, Courtney Roby has 23, Justin Gage had just four last year in Chicago and Jonathan Orr has none.
"I told these guys they've got just as much opportunity as everybody else," Graves said. "I've got some toddlers over here and you guys are the infants. Now who wants to play? It's not like we've got 10-year vets or guys who were All-Pro."
From Graves' standpoint, Davis might have the easiest transition.
The routes he ran out of the slot for the Seminoles closely resemble what he will be asked to do for the Titans.
Williams and Filani are bigger receivers who will line up outside for different roles.
"We talk to each other; we tell each other what to do," Davis said. "It's almost like we're already a family. I like it, all of us starting at the same level trying to learn."
Getting noticed
Graves wants to see a steady learning curve out of all three players. Run the right routes; be in the right places; show responsibility. Those things will give a player a platform to help him emerge from the crowd, Graves said.
"Always put out your best effort, but the biggest thing is I want them to be consistent catching the ball, knowing their assignments, being in the right spot doing what they are supposed to do," Graves said. "All that other stuff, it'll come later on.
"I don't want them to worry 'Am I doing the exceptional? Am I doing something so everybody notices me?' You'll get noticed. That's not the problem. Learn what we're doing. Don't try to read page 20 of the book when we're on page 10.
