| Greatest Comeback: 1961 Oilers the 1961 Oilers (grand daddy of the Titans) made perhaps the greatest comeback in the history of Pro Football. After a 1-3-1 start, the Oilers replaced head coach Lou Rymkus with Wally Lemm, and the team won all its remaining games, including the AFL title against the Chargers.
This was a team that featured George Blanda. Blanda replaced starting quarterback Jacky Lee and threw for 36 touch downs the rest of the way. The team also had star halfback Billy Gannon and Flanker Charlie Hennigan who gained over 1,700 yards receiving.
Blanda doubled as the place kicker and booted kicks of over 50 yards twice in the season.
Head Coach Wally Lemm summed up his role in the comeback by saying, "I feel like someone who inherited a million dollars in tarnished silverware. All I did was polish it." |
