Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

Titans embarrassing city of Nashville
September 22, 2006
The latest soap opera-style drama in the Tennessee Titans organization played out this week in front of the entire sports world when Titans Head Coach Jeff Fisher lashed out at former Titan quarterback Billy Volek.
Fisher apparently intended to address what he said were inaccuracies in Volek’s account of the last six months where Volek inexplicably went from starter to third string quarterback. What the coach ended up doing was embarrassing himself, the team and this city.

Fisher should have simply moved on after Volek was traded to San Diego. Instead, he went after a player in the press – something that should be beneath a man with Fisher’s responsibilities.

The Titans, in truth, have been more than a disappointment for the last three years. They have been an abysmal example of both a football team and to a certain extent a poor corporate citizen.

The team on the field is embarrassing and for no discernable reason. In the modern NFL, the rules of free agency allow teams to rebuild in as little as a year. Why that has not happened in Nashville is anybody’s guess. In addition, Titans’ draft picks have washed out on a disturbingly consistent basis.

The result is a team trying to play Fisher’s smash-mouth style of football with frighteningly bad results.

Off the field, the Titans have experienced a steady string of incidents where players end up on the wrong end of the law. Another off field wrinkle has been the team’s consistent tendency to part poorly with players that have given everything for their team and this city — namely Steve McNair and Eddie George.

When this week’s disaster with Volek is considered alongside the losing records of the last two years, the losing season that appears inevitable this year and repeated off the field incidents, there is no other conclusion to reach other than Fisher has simply lost control of his team.

Nashville and Tennessee deserve much more from the Titans than the team’s current on-field performance and the melodrama that typifies the franchise’s off-the-field presence. This city’s taxpayers rolled out the red carpet for the Titans, and the current product is simply not an acceptable return on that investment.

The buck stops with Fisher, and this season should be his last chance to make progress. After that, owner Bud Adams and the Titans need to move on.

Show of hands Nashvillites...you folks embarrassed by the Titans?...by Volek?...Fisher?...Lack of Offense?...not taking Jay Culter in the draft?...Any of these?

I caught the interview with Fischer on TV and didn't think much about it one way or another...

Re: Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

The whole Volek mess was handled badly on both sides. Regardless of where the blame lies, it should have never come to be headline news like it did.

I don't have any problem with taking Vince Young over Jay Cutler. While I would have been fine with getting any of the top 3 QB's, Fisher proved that he could win with a Steve McNair style quarterback. While Vince isn't McNair, there are similarities and VY is the most similar of the top drafted QB's.

So I'm frustrated & ready for some wins. But I think we're 1-2 years away from getting some decent wins from the Titans here in Nashville.

Thrashed what would you do if the Gaints moved to LA? i mean NFL franchises move around a lot and moving from Houston to Tennessee is one thing but a coast to coast move has gotta be an attendance killer

Well I would have 2 options if the Giants moved to LA. 3 if you wanna count the party and accompanyning celebration (sorry, had to get that out of the way!). Now those 2 options alex:

1. Become a Jets fan as they are the team that represents New York
2. Get Direct TV with it's Sunday ticket and follow another team. That would be kinda exciting cuz then I could just start fresh with an out of town team or follow the Giants. For an out of town team these would be the candidates in order:
1. Minnesota Vikings
2. Baltimore Ravens
3. San Diego Chargers
4. Cincinatti Bengals
5. Denver Broncos

Re: Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

interesting, thanks for that, i was just curious becuase i know it has happened to a large number of teams at one time or another and cos it very VERY rarely happens to soccer teams in the UK, i was just wondering what you guys would do if your team left your home town or city or state...or in this case time zone

Re: Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

Coaching staff didn't want Young but the front office (ol' Bud) did. Leinart made more sense given the coaching staff. Alas, he doesn't provide the exciting improvisations. Additionally, they didn't want a potentially successful and locally popular interim QB (Volek) that could keep Young on the sidelines because they had given Young a whole pot full of $. Answer: Get rid of McNair (poorly), discredit Volek (wrongfully) and get him to move on and get a crappy interim QB (Collins) that no one will be sad to see replaced in week 6 or 7.

Don't blame Fisher. When he's allowed to do his thing he's proven he can. When management begins to help, they've proven they can screw up an anvil with a rubber hammer. Once season tickets and luxury boxes are sold, management has no further incentive to put a good product out. It's cost cutting time. Fisher got pushed out in front of the cameras to silence the questions, but that incoherent explanation doesn't follow the seniments of team members and/or Volek's actions. Smoke and mirrors.

KRT Wire | 09/23/2006 | Titans' handling of Volek turns into a nightmare

If Nasville is embarrassed, then they have no one to blame but themselves. The City of Nashville chose to dance with the devil when they brought Adams to town. The whole state got to pay for his shiny new stadium. Thank you Mayor Bredesen and Gov. Sundquist. All anyone needed to do was to look at his history with Houston. No, sports fans, it will get much worse before it gets better. Adams ran that team into the ground and blamed the city. When the $ quit coming, should anyone expect different here?

Re: Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

Hi etodd, welcome to GoTeamsGo.

So you're not a big fan of Bud, eh?

I can see where you're coming from. Bud had a horrible reputation for what happened with Houston. If this is all engineered by him, it's the 1st time that he's really done something like this with Nashville.

Look forward to chatting more with you.

Fine first post my friend! Welcome to Goteamsgo! I hope you critique other NFL franchises as wonderfully as you did the Titans.

Funny to see that here. If I'm a fan of anybody it's Eli Manning. He's never been a front runner, but back to his days at Ole Miss, he can get the the heart to pumping. He usually doesn't get warmed up until the 4th quarter. Giants would do well to invest a couple of bucks for duct tape for Shockey's mouth. I have to say though, it appears here in the foothills that the Giants are putting forth more of an effort to field a team than the hapless Titans.

See now etodd, I have been fighting the good fight trying to get this doom and gloom crowd to see the error of their way when it comes to may man Eli...

Welcome aboard...we could use an Eli-Allied...

Re: Titans embarrassing city of Nashville

My girlfriend...ex-girlfriend now once drove through Baltimore and Philly and all the devotion dedicated to the Eagles and Ravens was wonderful. Ah if only I had Direct-TV NFL Sunday Ticket and I could leave Coughlin's mess behind. My grandma lives just outside of Baltimore so i'd choose Ray Lewis and the gang 1st!

Wow, seems this thread of experts, just went away. How quick we are to find something else to do. Nashville loves the Titans, win or lose.
