Tennessee Titans rookie quarterback Vince Young played one series last weekend in his pro debut against the New York Jets, trotting off the sideline and onto the field with just under nine minutes to go in the second quarter.
He completed his first three passes, two of which went for first downs, but underthrew a ball down the far right sideline and was picked off at the New York 6. With that, his afternoon was over, save for a two-point PAT.
Coach Jeff Fisher has said he plans to avoid the temptation to play his prized rookie too early by giving him a series or two in each game, including tomorrow against the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium. That one possession against the Jets could turn out to be a microcosm of Young's first season, in that his joys will be accompanied by growing pains.
But that has not tempered the Titans' excitement. They talk not only about his running ability and arm strength, but also his presence.
“He's got natural leadership abilities,” Fisher said this summer. “Everybody says that about him, and I heard it as well. But it's not until you're around him that you see his skills aren't just natural, but maybe supernatural. That means maybe not saying anything and still leading, or saying something sometimes when it's needed. He loves the game, and he loves his teammates.
“When he got off the airplane on Saturday, draft day, after leaving New York and arriving in Nashville, he walked into my office and gave me a hug. The first thing out of his mouth was, 'It's great to have a team again,' because he had gone three months without a team. And that's what he's all about, the team.”
| The more I hear about this kid, the more I like him. I like what he can do on a football field, sure, but I love the fact that he seems to have the fire you need in a QB, as well as the team-first mentality Fisher's talking about here. How do you think he will do against San Diego this week? |
