Yeesh, and both Lugo and Crawford are said to be on the block. They take up over $6 million of the $35 million team payroll. Maybe dealing them will free up some bucks so that Tampa Bay can actually try to keep Kazmir and Gomes around a while. Then again, maybe not.

Lugo, Cantu, Gomes, Wiggington, Fossum, and Crawford are steals! If they were Yankee players, they'd each have salaries of 5 million+ a year.

I wouldn't knock the Marlins for the light spending this year, they're waiting until they get a stadium of their own. When they want to ('97 and the season a few years ago) they spend a bunch.

With the D-Rays, wow, it just makes you want to spin your head at how low they spend. You'd think with all the money they get from the top spenders, they would spend more on the team...guess not. Teams like this make me wish Selig and the Union would enforce a minimum team salary rule.

Rebuilding phase? The DRays have never spent money in their existence. I would make the minimum team payroll be at the $50 Million mark. So if that were the case this year, the Marlins, D-Rays, Pirates, Rockies and Royals would all be the teams that need to get their payrolls up.

When MLB's economic system gives a lot of money to the teams mentioned due to the higher spending teams spending, the money is suppose to be used for baseball things. I understand some of it's used for organizational purproses (ie. scouting, analyzing games, whatever of the sort) but something tells me the teams above aren't using the money they get for the right reasons. Out of all the teams mentioned, only the D-Rays have an above average farm system and that's only because they refuse to pay any legit stars.

YES! I agree completely, Empire. Too many fat cat owners are pocketing all the profits, quite content to trot out mediocre to pathetic teams in order to keep overhead down and keep raking in the dough. Yes, a team needs to be profitable but at the same time, these guys owe it to the fans to be competitive as well. Of course, if we all would just stop buying tickets and merchandise, they'd get the message, but I doubt that'd ever happen.
