Delmon Young Hits Umpire

It happened a couple of nights ago when Delmon Young was called out on strike three. He stood in the batters box, stared at the ump and then walked towards the dugout. Then he threw his bat, hitting the Ump in the chest.

The ump is alright, while Young has been suspended indefinitely by the Durham Bulls (Tampa Bay's AAA affilliate I believe).

Young is the best prospect, no doubt about that. This surprised the hell out of me that he would do something like that.

I wonder if his big brother, Dmitri Young will beat his little bro down for doing something so stupid and costly.

Well did he throw it out of a tantrum or was he aiming at the Ump?...makes all the difference in the world...first one he is immature and probably will grow out of it...second one...well, they better keep an eye on their prize prospect. Anyone can make a mistake...the great one's will grow from it...

Re: Delmon Young Hits Umpire

Well, if you watch the video, you can't tell whether or not the bat was thrown purposely at the umpire. But the fact is, you aren't allowed to throw a bat anyway! You are not allowed to throw ANY equipment onto the baseball field.

Umpires have been shoved, kicked dirt at, or spit at by certain big leaguers throughout the years... the punishment is usually 15-30 days... how long do you think Young should get?

Still...there is a difference...give him 3 games...if you can't proof it was more than accidental...oh and make him run the stadium stairs 100 times with Ump gear on...

Re: Delmon Young Hits Umpire

I can't imagine it was an accident. I had a chance to see the video, and from what I saw, Young -- offscreen, mind you -- threw the bat, and it looked to be sailing pretty good when it hit the umpire. It looked to catch him square in the chest, too. I guess only Young knows for sure what his intentions were, but I kind of doubt he plays baseball again.

Here's a link to the video. He threw that bat rather hard. The UMP could have been seriously injured. 3 games only? I think not. The kid deserves a lot more. It sure doesn't look accidental.

Cool Re: Delmon Young Hits Umpire

Man you guys are harsh...sure hope none of you ever tosses anything at work as a reaction...
You guys want to ban him from baseball for that?...come on now...suspend him sure...but take away the guys career over it?...You guys have an over developed sense of revenge...What did Randall Simons get for smashing the Running Sausage with the bat?...I mean Randall waited for the Sausage and smashed her...did he get kicked out?...I have seen players take the bat to other players in the mist of a brawl and not get kicked out of the game for life...you guys are a bit harsh...hope none of you ever makes a mistake in life...Kermit Washington almost puts Rudy-T in a coma and it was like 28 games...

Why don't you all just line up and publicly stone the guy...come on now...line up...grab a stone and start chucking at Delmon....I mean all the sinless folks out there...come on now start chucking...Sprewell chokes the hell out of his coach and its a year...lifetime ban huh?...my, my...lets come back to reality a bit...

Re: Delmon Young Hits Umpire

From the video I saw, it looked like he must have flipped the bat backhanded as he walked away from the umpire. The way the bat was spinning and the angle it came from suggested that to me. I could not imagine a player actually intentionally throwing a bat at an umpire, but I heard that this is his third major problem in a couple of years. He needs to be suspended for a goodly amount of games, but there could be some Ron Artest like issues with this kid. He is supposed to be a five tool player with great ability, but if this type of behavior continues then he is going to be a marked man. If he finally learns from what he did, intentional or not, then it may have a good outcome.
When I used to play softball, I was very intense. I vividly remember a game where I wasn't feeling well, took two pitches that were called strikes, and then swung and missed for strike three. For a second I stood in the box and then I fired my bat at the backstop. When I turned, I saw to my horror that it had stuck in the backstop, inches away from a child's head. Those few inches were the difference from me being labeled an intense player, rather than a criminal who had injured or even killed a kid with his bat. I will never forget that as long as I live. I am a normal guy who could have been responsible for a terrible thing but for pure luck. I would hate to see this kid labeled a criminal for something stupid that got out of control.

Aaah...a voice of reason finally!...nice call Legend...and yes, I thought the same about the bat...(based on the head over heel spin he gave it)...hope the kid makes it...I think he is a hot head, but hey to destroy a whole career for it....a bit much...

Re: Delmon Young Hits Umpire

Look at what George Brett would have done if he had not been restrained in the Pine Tar Game. Give the kid a chance, but keep him on a tight leash. If he repeats such actions, then he gets what he deserves.

You mean like Steve Howe?...(may he rest in peace...killed himself in a car accident a few days ago)...he got about a zillion chances?...didn't cost him his career after one or two...

DBrink I am high on this kid as well...I really thikn he is just wound up a little tight and he has the ability to ease up and change some...I think he will be alright soon enough...I don't see how people think this should cause him his career...
