Bucs quarterback race heats up

Even though its only been 2 months since the Bucs drafted Josh Freeman, the Bucs are rethinking the idea of bringing him along slowly.
He has done well in offseason workouts and minicamp. He may start sooner than was expected.
Veterans Luke McCown and Byron Leftwich are the frontrunners, but neither has done anything to distinguish themselves.
Coach Raheem Morris says he will play the best guy.

What do you think are Freeman's chances of starting sometime soon in the season?

Re: Bucs quarterback race heats up

Freeman is a Bum. As soon as he gets a taste at what speed the NFL defense's have. He will be the new Throwin Somowin Jack Thompson Tampa will be nicknamed INT City. Put him on the trade Block and get a real QB next year when the Real QB'S will be in the draft. But of course his boyfreind and lover Raheem wont do that so we will have to wait till he is fired.
Well lets take a closer look shall we. All Morris could talk about was his so called achievements.
Fact yes Freeman threw for 8,078 yards in his college career. Fact he threw 44 Touchdown passes but he attempted 1,151 passes doing it which by the way he only completed 680 of them. He also threw 34 INT’S that’s a average of .77 Int’s for each TD and to add to that is only a 57.9% completion ratio.
He was also sacked 57 times resulting in a loss of yards. Gee you would think by then he would have learned to throw the ball away. Vinny Testaverde did better than that. Bruce Gradkowski had a better record in college. Now lets look at another unknown
Luke McCown Luke played four years OK he threw for a total of 12,666 yards he made a total of 1176 attempted passes he completed 1063 of them . He had 87 TD’s and he had 62 Int’s That’s a 60% completion ratio. And I see and hear all these Fans that think they know that Luke will wash out. All I can say is Facts don’t lie It was a WASTED PICK on a never will be by a rookie HC and GM in there first draft. And we are not done there are a lot of other mistakes made by them in this draft.
So What does the fish and Freeman have in common FLOP,FLOP,FLOP

Hey Bucman,
I had to edit your post a bit and tone it down a little for our PG rated forum . And no links.
Otherwise, what is your answer for quarterback? What will happen to that much vaunted Bucs defense this season?

Thats simple Stick with McCown at least till next year till the real QB's come out of school. Thats why Freeman came out in his JR year he knew he would be a 5th or 6th round pick next year . As far as the defense well we will wait till next year Bates has been fired for good reasons

You know what? Who cares what round or what year it was when he was drafted. Tom Brady was drafted in the 6th round. It really does not matter when you were drafted, but how you do once you are drafted. If Freeman can come out and win games for me and give my team the best chance of getting to the play-offs, then I want Freeman to start.

Honestly, now that the draft is over it is really about who can and can't do the job right. I think you should look past the draft and at his skill level. Oh, and by the way, I doubt he would go into the 5th or 6th round if he was drafted next year. 2nd or 3rd maybe.

Refresh my memory about what exactly McCown has done for the Bucs

Re: Bucs quarterback race heats up

Well he has only played seven games with them But thats seven more then Freeman has. And he kicked the Saints butt for them. Coming in cold from the bench and has a better record threw college the Freeman and played at a school where the college elite defense's play against and won. And oh yeah he does not have the Int's that Freeman has I have more if you want to hear it.

Out of those 7 games, how many besides the Saints did he win?
(Was Brees playing in that game?)

Re: Bucs quarterback race heats up

Yes Brees did play that game. McCowns overall record was
Passing Attempts 140 comp 94 yards 1'009 int's 3 TD's 5 His Rating was 91.7%
the wins I will have to research But I believe it was 2 (Chicago) & (Saints)
Rushed 15 times for 132 yrds his avg was 8.8 his longest was 31 yrds this is over two years each time he was cold from the bench. All I am saying is he should have the chance after all Freeman has a big 0 on everything and when you are playing for Gruden and could do that. That is pretty dam good

ok, you've won me over. Was that when Garcia was there?
Gruden always had so many quarterbacks in his stable it was a joke, but he could never develop one. Guess he thought if he had enough one of them would miraculously be "the guy" He didnt seem to know they have to be developed. His overly complicated play book was one reason they could never develop.
Where did people get the idea Gruden was such a genius? He never really accomplished much when he came to the Bucs. And why was he so successful with the Raiders?

Re: Bucs quarterback race heats up

Freeman may have had a rough college career. However, if he is doing good now, doesn't he deserve a chance? Maybe he there is a coach there that really clicks with him. Maybe he has really adapted to the playbook. Either way, if he can give the Bucs the best chance of winning games, he will probably start.

Do I think he will end up starting? Probably not. However it is a possiblitly. Maybe this whole thing is just to get the other Bucs quarterbacks to start working harder. Maybe some pre-season games and more training camps will tell.

I know my football coaches will sometimes use that tactic to get more kids trying harder. The fear tactic that this year you may not make the team or start.
