I'm one of the few Buccs fans who loves Mike Clayton. His attitude, his desire and his toughness are everything a fan should love. Yes, he appears to have been a disappointment for a 1st round pick, but you have to look beyond his draft status. Can MC 80 be considered a bust for the number 15 overall pick? Yes he can. Would you consider him a bust if he was the number 215 overall pick? Hell no.
I think every Buccaneer fan was stunned when the Buccs passed over Steven Jackson, Vince Wilfork and DJ Williams to draft Mike. He probably would have fallen out of the 1st round had John Gruden and Bruce Allen not reached for him. Can you blame Clayton because Gruden and Allen can't spot 1st round talent to save their lives?
The topic at hands is not Clayton's draft status of 5 years ago, it's what does he bring to the table today on the field. Forget he was a 1st rounder for a minute and evaluate his play. Mike is a tough, hard nosed WR who fights for every yard when he's got the ball. He's had his drop problems in the past, and they are well documented. I'm a true believer that MC 80 will flourish now that Gruden has had his ass fired. Mike will never be a #1 Wide Reciever. It's not his fault the Buccs front office thought he could be. Clayton as a #2 lined up opposite Antonio Bryant is deadly. He proved so this past season. He was open so often last season, and Garcia was too careful to throw the ball downfield. The opportunities were created by Mike to catch twice as many balls last season. He's only 26 years old.
If there is a better blocking WR in the League now that Keyshawn is retired, point him out to me.
