Buccs Hire Jeff Jagodzinski to OC Position

Just a week after naming veteran coach Jim Bates as Tampa Bay’s defensive coordinator, the Buccaneers have announced the hiring of former Boston College head coach Jeff Jagodzinski as offensive coordinator. The 45-year old Jagodzinski has 14 years of college coaching experience and eight years worth of experience in the NFL.

Jagodzinski was fired from his Boston College post for interviewing with the New York Jets earlier in January after compiling a 20-8 record in two seasons with the Eagles, including an 11-3 mark and a 10th-ranked finish in 2007 with quarterback Matt Ryan, who was the number three overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. Jagodzinski interviewed for offensive coordinator positions with the Cleveland Browns and San Francisco 49ers before signing with Tampa Bay.

Jagodzinski’s NFL experience began as Green Bay's tight ends coach in 1999 under Ray Rhodes. He coached Bubba Franks and the Packers’ other tight ends until 2003 when he was fired. After his dismissal, Jagodzinski became Atlanta's offensive line coach where he studied the zone blocking concepts from Alex Gibbs, a noted NFL offensive line guru.

Sources tell PewterReport.com that Jagodzinski will incorporate a zone-blocking run game in Tampa Bay like the kind he deployed at Boston College and similar to the famous zone-blocking run schemes that former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan ran in Denver for over a decade.

Jagodzinski’s play-calling experience at the NFL level is limited to 2006 when he was hired by Green Bay head coach Mike McCarthy to replace Tom Rossley as the Packers offensive coordinator. During that year, quarterback Brett Favre completed 343 of a career-high 613 passes (56 percent) for 3,885 yards with 18 touchdowns and 18 interceptions for a Packers team that finished 8-8. Green Bay’s offense ranked 22nd in points per game and ninth in total yards. Wide receiver Donald Driver led the Packers with 92 catches for 1,295 yards and eight touchdowns, while Ahman Green was the team’s leading rusher with 1,059 yards and five touchdowns on 266 carries.

In 2007, he became the Boston College head coach, replacing Tom O'Brien, and coached the likes of Ryan, offensive tackle Gosder Cherilus, who was a first-round pick last year, and defensive tackles B.J. Raji and Ron Brace. Raji is expected to become a first-round pick in 2009.

At Boston College, Jagodzinski and offensive coordinator Steve Logan relied on a heavy dose of the running game and play-action passes to the tight ends and wide receivers in a more vertical-based, spread offense than Jagodzinski's predecessor, Tom O'Brien, operated with his West Coast offensive scheme.
