| Time Is Running Out For Clayton There was a time, a season, when he seemed heaven-sent. That was Michael Clayton's rookie season with the Bucs. If he wasn't catching footballs, he was praying for help. He never got put on hold. Last week, Clayton thought back three years to a Monday night game at St. Louis. He'd injured his knee; treatment wasn't working. He was limping during warm-ups. He kept asking God for a sign. 'I'm on my knees,' Clayton said. The game began. Brian Griese threw to Clayton, who caught a comebacker for 16 yards. He felt no pain. He caught eight balls for 142 yards. It was like that then. It's nothing like that now. Clayton is fighting for his NFL life. Three years later and he's a question mark. He can still recite his rookie numbers. '80; 1,193; 7,' Clayton said. Eighty catches, 1,193 yards, seven touchdowns. It's nothing like that now. 'I'm definitely making this team,' Clayton said. A few moments later: 'I'm going to take it back. I won't even say I'm definitely going to make this team. I don't know if I will. But the effort I give will get me to where I need to go.' Time Is Running Out For Former Rookie Standout Clayton |
