Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

"You can't unilaterally retire as a player in the NFL,'' Tampa Bay General Manager Bruce Allen said more than once during a news conference Thursday after adjourning his team for the balance of the summer. "You have a contract. He is under the same obligations as every player on the team.''

The key term is "unilateral,'' which means "one-sided.'' Plummer isn't some insurance agent leaving a local State Farm. The decision to retire isn't totally his. Plummer's retirement papers may be sitting at league headquarters in New York, but they don't mean anything until the Bucs co-sign them.

The language of NFL retirement procedures couldn't be plainer:

If a player is under contract at the time of his retirement, it is his club's responsibility to determine his roster status.

The language of the Bucs couldn't be plainer, either.

"We traded for him with the intent of him playing for the Buccaneers,'' Allen said.

How about that...always thought you could hang it up...how come you can cut a guy under contract, but the guy can't retire?...must be all in the weasel wording of the contract.

This is sad, is like hanging on to a girl and calling her your girlfriend when she doesn't want to see you anymore.

That is exactly how I got my wife

What are they going to do if he doesn't play? They can't demand money back. They haven't paid him any.

Thank you for that bit of insight AZREAL

...and that is what I am thinking...what the heck...unless they don't want to release him and he ends up on another team...

They're not paying him, but aren't they keeping him from collecting retirement benefits? Think he'll try and sue for his retirement?

Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

This is just making them look even worse. It was bad enough Plummer chose retirement over playing for them. Now they are embarassing themselves by trying to make him.

Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

They just wont give up wont they... This is too sad what they are doing trying to bring back an overrated quarterback in Jake (the fake) Plummer what are they thinking about? Even my friend a Buccaneer fan thinks this is too much. So i ask you this do you think that plummer should be asked for or trust in Garcia or what my friend said Give Simms another chance?

Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

I asked this before. What do they want with him anyway? Would he be a starter and is Chris Simms any good or not??????

I have no idea, Bette. Simms is definitely good enough to be a backup, as is Gradkowski (who's young, but will wind up being quite good). Garcia's pencilled in as the starter. If Plummer were to come back today, I have no idea where he'd be, or who he'd ultimately replace on the roster. This makes no sense to me whatsoever.

That would be interesting...the Bucs are really getting negative PR on this aren't they?

Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

Good to know I am not the only one confused on this issue.

GDK makes a good point about being able to cut the guy but he cant retire without their ok. Thats lousy.

Re: Bucs won't let Plummer retire

I thinks that they should let him go but at least get something for him, I'm a buccs fan and I think that we should work on something else besides someone who dosn't want to play for the buccs. Pitch him to the dogs and bring in some real meat...

I don't think they can get anything else for him except the player back from the Broncos that he was traded for...if he has not been returned already.

Maybe they could trade the rights to him to another team and see if that would lure him out of retirement.
