A quiet demeanor belies confidence for the soft-spoken Ejiro Evero, but nothing can mask his knowledge of the gridiron. Ask him to talk about football, and an impressive understanding of the game follows. Not surprisingly, the former Aggie defensive back and assistant coach, who knows a thing or two about being at the right place at the right time, has recently been called upon to leave the UC Davis coaching staff and head to Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers' new assistant linebackers' coach.
"I want to go as far as I can go," Evero said. "But I want to do the best job as I can and don't want to look ahead."
Evero, 26, was hired by Buccaneers' defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and will also serve as Tampa Bay's defensive quality control coach.
Evero was unexpectedly offered the job when he went to visit friend and former Aggie alumni Nathaniel Hackett, son of Buccaneer quarterback coach Paul Hackett. Nathaniel Hackett, a linebacker and a long snapper during his time as an Aggie, invited Evero down to Tampa Bay during the off-season.
Kiffin struck a casual conversation with Evero, and Kiffin was impressed with his football knowledge. Alas, as there was no opening in the coaching staff, Kiffin could not offer Evero a job. But Kiffin did not forget the Aggie defensive back coach and came calling in May when a vacancy opened up in defensive quality control.
