Bucs sign TE Jerramy Stevens

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed free agent TE Jerramy Stevens.

According to the Associated Press, "Stevens, a first-round draft pick in 2002, was an unrestricted free agent who the Seahawks said they were no longer interested in retaining after the player was arrested last month in Scottsdale, Ariz., for investigation of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana... Stevens had a career-high 45 receptions for 554 yards two seasons ago when he helped Seattle reach the Super Bowl, however his production dipped to 22 catches for 231 yards and four touchdowns in 2006." Good pick up for Tampa Bay?

Re: Bucs sign TE Jerramy Stevens

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers paid a signing bonus of (drum roll, please) zero dollars and zero cents to tight end Jerramy Stevens in connection with his contract to join the team.

The deal is for one year, and pays a salary of $600,000. Thus, the team can walk away before the start of the regular season and owe him nothing. If he's cut after the games that count commence, he'll have the option to take the balance of his salary under the rule giving each player with four years of service in the league the one-time ability to collect the rest of his current year's pay.

Sounds like a good deal for both sides, stevens gets a second chance and the bucs get him for cheap and on their terms..

Yeah, that's a heck of a deal for the Bucs. It's a low risk gamble that could net them a starting tight end.

If Stevens keeps his head on straight, this could be a steal for the Bucs. He has great potential, but a big mouth!

Re: Bucs sign TE Jerramy Stevens

This is a move that really could pay dividends for the Bucs. Getting a 6'7" tight end with obvious talent for virtually nothing can't be seen as a negative. And the option to cut him loose if character issues arise certainly is a nice out to have. Maybe he'll realize he's getting another shot and will work hard to prove his worth...
