Cool Simms ruptures spleen!

Chris Simms had his spleen removed after the Tampa-Carolina game (As I'm typing this, I'm actually getting queasy ) . He was dehydrated and vomitting during the game but then actually re-entered the game. I'll tell you, football is a BRUTAL sport....It looks like he's done for the year.

Re: Simms ruptures spleen!

Yep, looks like it ruptured during the game and was removed afterwards.

Associated Press

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Tampa Bay quarterback Chris Simms had his spleen removed after taking several hard hits in Sunday's 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers and was resting comfortably in a hospital, according to a television report.

Simms had a blood transfusion as part of his treatment and was expected to be hospitalized for several days, Peter King said during a break on NBC's Sunday Night Football, citing a conversation he had with Simms' mother, Diana Simms.

King, a reporter for Sports Illustrated, also said the quarterback did not appear to be in any imminent danger.

Couldn't you have been a kicker or something not so...you know...injury prone?

Re: Simms ruptures spleen!

Nope, Tim Rattay was cut in the preason I believe. It's Gradkowski's team now.

Interesting story about the whole Simms situation from Post-Gazette.com.

NFL Notebook: Reports of Simms' condition were exaggerated
Sunday, October 01, 2006

From wire reports

The Chris Simms story started last Sunday evening with a couple of Internet reports that said the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback was in "critical condition." One of them added that his family had been called to his bedside.

It was all very alarming, with the not-too-subtle implication that the 26-year-old quarterback, who had just been beaten and battered in a loss to Carolina, might be on his death bed.

Alarm certainly was the reaction in the press box at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, where the Patriots were preparing to play the Broncos. It was much the same in Charlotte, where the word spread quickly -- even reaching Carolina defensive lineman Al Wallace, who delivered one of the harder hits on Simms in the game.

"I tried to listen to the reports," Wallace said. "I called my wife to see what happened. I scrambled home and started praying."

What did the Buccaneers have to say about all this? At first, nothing.

They stonewalled, the natural, knee-jerk response for NFL teams whenever they're questioned on health issues. But what opponent was going to gain an advantage from postgame misinformation that badly needed immediate clarification?

Finally, Peter King of Sports Illustrated and NBC, who has a longtime relationship with the Simms family, reached Chris' mother Diana about two hours after the report surfaced, and the truth came out: Simms had surgery to remove his spleen, and was not in any danger.
Definitely does make you wonder - if Simms wan't in any danger, why not make that known immediately?

Actually, I'm not a very big guy but I could have been a safety or corner or special teams player or...sat on the bench and flirted with the Cheerleaders .

Re: Simms ruptures spleen!

According to various reports, Simms has been released from the hospital and is expected to recover in about six weeks. Bruce Gradkowski is currently pencilled in as the starter for Sunday's game.
