Forum Avatars: Suggestions?

How to Get an Avatar

You may have seen that we do have the option of allowing members to have their own custom forum avatars but I've had it turned off for almost everyone.

I'm thinking about letting members who are active participants have the option of using an avatar, kind of as a thank you for helping us grow the community.

The 2 easiest ways for me to control this is by allowing it for members with a minimum number of posts and/or a minimum number of days since they registered.

One thing that I'm pretty solid on is that they'll be fairly small in dimension & in file size. I've currently got the limits set to a max of 80x80 and about 9k. No animated avatars will be allowed. I don't want them to be too intrusive and I don't want them to add too much loading time to the pages, especially for the members that use a slower internet connection. fyi, my avatar is 80x80 and only 3.2k.

Any suggestions on this?

I'm all for the minimum number of posts, especially since I've got a few myself. Good luck and I agree with all your other options for the avatar.

Ditto! I would like to do that also! Ross, I did see that it was turned off, then when I saw your first post with your avatar, I was like how did he do that? 1 millisecond later, I was slapping my head, saying, "Oh yeah, he's the MAN, he can do whatever he wants!" I think it's a great idea, which ever way you decide to run with it.

Cool Re: Forum Avatars: Suggestions?

I would go with minimum number of days since they registered, you don't want people posting replies just to get an avatar, if they come back after an amount of time determined by you then you know that they are going to be a loyal member and not just a jumper. As far as the 80X80 that should work fine, I have seen plenty of 64X64 that work great. Looking forward to seeing some Nascar avatars. Keep up the good work!!!

So am I to understand that you need to post a lot just to get an avatar and you don't allow sig pics either??? Dang you guys are stingy here. I mean an 80 x 80 avatar is such a small thing I don't see why it should be a gift on a site with as many members as you guys have and it shouldn't slow down the server either..wow!!

What's the need for pics in the sig?

And I'm fine with having a small avatar. It keeps GTG fresh and smooth flowing. I don't think there has been a serious problem with speed or the server since the forum's inception earlier this year.

Re: Forum Avatars: Suggestions?

I've been on other sports forums where avatars are porn! That is a violation already so I think that we should keep it as it is. Only a few more posts, Sweets!

Re: Forum Avatars: Suggestions?

Empire, I didn't say that sigs had to have pics but the way someone explained it in here it seemed like the reason you don't have them is because of server slowdown, avatars are so insignificant in reference to server loads that I just thought it was weird that avatars here are given as a reward that's all. It's your site, and you do what you want. I was just asking a question.

Re: Forum Avatars: Suggestions?

Well I don't know but hinting at RMjVol's thinking at the time, the GTGBoards were starting up, we didn't have much here but slowly things like new smilies/avatars/sigs/etc. were added to the boards. The functions haven't been changed since I'll assume the beginning of the Summer.

Perhaps the Admins should go back and rethink stuff like that, I don't know.

It takes awhile for you to accumilate enough post for avatars unless you just post to be posting.

I still havent got enough.
