Re: A forum for non-sports material? Thats another good point you bring up. If you ask any woman if she knows who Linda Hamilton is, and suggest that she is an idiot if she is unfamiliar with the name, that woman will look at you like your insane. This is simply an educated guess, but I would assume that 80% of the female population in this country has no idea that Linda Hamilton even exists, much less Sarah Connor.

Re: A forum for non-sports material? I think you are a distinct minority but I guess need to be represented in my sweeping generalizations. Probably half as many women as men have actually seen T2 (I cannot believe how much I have talked about this movie, I have only seen it once and am not an avid fan of it. It's good, not great) and of that half, probably 3-5% have a similar memory where they remember the character but not the actress who played her. This only emphasizes her as a "that girl" if people commonly recognize her as a character in a movie.

Re: A forum for non-sports material? Haha, I knew something was afoot. Let me make a film recommendation for a reading enthusiast. You may have already seen it but Capote was my favorite movie of 2005. It really delves deep into the writing process as it chronicles Truman Capote's experience while writing In Cold Blood. It won one (best actor) and was nominated for several other Oscars (Best Picture, supporting actress, adapted screenplay etc.). In short a complete contrast to T2.

Re: A forum for non-sports material? It's not that he won't like it, he will just be surprised! I went and checked out a trailer for that movie, it looks like it will be pretty good! I will be renting it when it comes out, unless he already knows about it (good chance) and rents it first. Happy Easter and a good weekend to all!

Help me! I love Scary Movie! Cheers, all. Okay, since we're generally talking movies in this one, i'd like somebody to help me out here. I used to be a film critic and i like to think i've got pretty decent taste. I'm somewhat hard to please, especially with regard to comedy. So, why, o why, do i enjoy the Scary Movie series so much? This is seriously stupid humor and i've never been a Wayans fan. So why? Why do i laugh uproariously at the huge joint in part 2 or Leslie Neilsen's turn as Prez in part 3? Does anyone else (on the planet) like this stuff? Help me better i spend money to go see part 4 (which would require me spending money on War of the Worlds, as i haven't seen it and i understand Scary Movie 4 parodies it quite a lot)! Please help?

Wizard: I think I know what a good movie is but I still get hysterical over the 3 Stooges and I Dream of Jeannie The point: Some things just tickle your fancy. Not every movie has to be realistic or have some artistic value. Silliness counts too. Wizard- This is a good thread you started. I can talk flicks all day but I've got to get started on my taxes. Nothing like waiting to the last second.

Re: A forum for non-sports material? Good Comedy holds a lot of artistic integrity in its own right. Films like Wedding Crashers, There's Something About Mary, Swingers, Dazed and Confused and yes, Bad Santa, are all acknowledged as clever, amusing satires on certain social predicaments and stereotypes. Comedy is often referred to as the most difficult genre to execute because making people laugh in an intelligent and original manner is not an easy task to manage. But of course, like any genre, there is good comedy and bad comedy. By my estimation, The Scary Movie franchise is bad comedy. It is aimless in that it doesn't even make fun of solely horror films anymore, and the jokes are all predictable in that you have seen or heard someone else make the same exact joke. All of the aforementioned films are considered good comedy because the hilarity they provide is derived from the existing plot (Anyone watch South Park this past week?). Will films of this ilk ever be nominated for Academy Awards? No. But that does not negate there place in cinema. Movies are meant to be an escape and to serve as entertainment (much like sports), and comedy is nothing if not entertaining. But watching poorly constructed Wayans Brothers movies is the film eqiuvalent of watching a Penn State-Northwestern basketball game. Whereas a Mel Brooks film is Duke-UNC.

Re: A forum for non-sports material? A little off topic as it pertains to television and not the movies, but does anyone watch "Da Ali G Show"? I caught a rerun last night and he had a bit where he was in character as the extremely flamboyant homosexual, Bruno. Somehow (probably because he could say he was affiliated with HBO) he coerced The University into letting him and his camera crew onto the sidelines during a 2002 Mississippi St. game where he proceeded to participate in the formation cheers with the Alabama cheerleaders, then he was subjected to a barrage of epithets. Sasha Baron Cohen is great at exposing the bigotry of the South and the superficiality of the model/club industry with his gay character from Germany. And he was in exemplatory in this bit. To the credit of the football team he interviewed the running back at the time (forgot his name) and I think he eventually realized it was a practical joke and just laughed off the series of questions with non-hostile answers confirming his heterosexuality. But the fan base at large could not have been portrayed any worse. So are there any Alabama fans out there? And how does it feel to be mocked to this degree? Did anyone actually attend the game in question? This was probably the funniest thing I have seen on TV (Outside of Arrested Development and aspects of The Sopranos) in the past ten years. So if you haven't seen it, I suggest trying to rent or download it. The episode it appears in is called "Belief".

Now this is a good lecture on why i shouldn't watch this film. But i can't help but laugh at some of the dead-on shots in Scary Movie 3. Like when Leslie Nielsen says, "Get me the president!" and dude next to him says, "Sir, you are the president." Or when Nielsen says, "I wonder what President Ford would do..." Cut to a painted portrait of Harrison Ford from his days in one of the single worst films EVER, Air Force One. Or the priceless pan up to reveal the crop field markings: ATTACK HERE. Or the wonderful Denise Richards scene which mocks one of the most ridiculous bits from the generally fairly ridiculous Signs... Or the appearance of that goddess Queen Latifah, which makes anything better. Maybe i'm hopeless. And Something about Mary and Swingers are brilliant... Cheers all. |
