Where's a Forum for My Team?

Had a few people ask about how we've decided to organize the forums here at GoTeamsGo and why there's not a forum for a particular team, conference, sports, whatever.

Since we opened the doors in early February 2006, we're trying to find the right balance of a sports fan forum that is easy for members to use and interesting enough to attract new members.

I spent ALOT of time looking at other forums, doing various research to try to determine the best way to set this up. In the beginning, it certainly makes sense to limit the total number of forums. But once there's a good bit of activity here, the most logical way is to go by individual team forums. This was pretty obvious once I'd looked at about 100 other sports forums. The ones that looked most successful usually had a clear logical structure and made it easy for fans of a particular team/sport to have a subforum to call home. There were plenty of exceptions but that's what I learned before we started here.

So for the time being, I'll try to build out new forums for teams as there seems to be enough interest to support it.

When to add a new forum?
The best indicator seems to be looking at the more active member's interests that they list in their profile plus what they're chatting about. For example, we've had several threads about the NY Knicks and ThePundit (one of our most active members) lists the Knicks as a favorite team. So I'm betting that we'll have enough discussion on the Knicks to have an active forum. In fact, I just added a NY Knicks forum today.

We want to try to avoid adding new forums that get just a small number of posts/threads and then sit stagnant. That's not the right way to go.

If you want to talk about a team that doesn't have a team specific forum yet, go ahead and chat about it in the appropriate sports forum:
MLB Baseball Forum
NBA Basketball Forum
NFL Football Forum
NHL Hockey Forum

Plus make sure you list your favorite teams in your member profile. Once I see enough discussion about a particular team, I'll create the new forum and move all the old discussions into the new forum.

I think 6-12 months from now, organizing by team will help make GoTeamsGo the best sports forum on the web.

Thanks again for chatting with us here at GoTeamsGo.

Thanks, Ross

Ross, thanks for clearing that up for me. My wife told me about this wonderful site because it had included a NASCAR board and I was trilled to see what the content really had! You have done a wonderful job. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, a New Orleans Hornets forum would be nice.
