Stanley Cup history

Did you know that the original Stanley Cup cost only about $50? Or that Lord Stanley, who obviously was the guy who purchased the award and the individual for whom it was named, never saw a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy? It's true, according to NHL.com's fascinating page devoted to Stanley Cup history. So, does anyone have an interesting story to share about this history of this classic championship trophy, or the Cup playoffs for that matter?

Re: Stanley Cup history

I just the love the fact that the Stanley Cup is given to each player of the winning team and for 24 hours they can take it WHEREVER they wish. It's plain cool to think about all the places it's been and such. I watched a NHL show on OLN last week about it. You'd be surprised about all the places it goes.

One year, Martin Brodeur took it to a local hockey game amongst his friends and they played for it. His team lost and his friends skated around with the cup lol. I could just imagine how he felt there.

It was dropped kicked across a forzen lake and left there...that's my favorite story...the darn thing probably has the dents.

Re: Stanley Cup history

I found this online about that story, Gotham: "OTTAWA, 1905. After the Ottawa Silver Seven won the Stanley Cup, one celebrant boasted he could kick it across the frozen-at-the-time Rideau Canal (which links Ottawa on the Ottawa River with Kingston on Lake Ontario). In a day when the Cup was a football-sized bowl and when most hockey players also played rugby, he proceeded to drop kick it into the frozen canal. (Some sources list it as being submerged, however read on.) The partyers proceeded to party elsewhere, leaving the Cup behind. The next morning, the players realized that the Cup was still at the Canal, so they headed to recover the Cup and fortunately found it right where they left it On Colden Pond (or canal)."

That info was from The Stanley Cup: A History of Abuse and Neglect. From the same site, you can read about how the 1940 Rangers urinated in it, how Clark Gillies of the 1980 New York Islanders allowed his dog to eat from it, how Chris Nilan of the 1986 Habs photographed the Cup with his infant son actually sitting inside of it, and how one of the 1987 Oilers had a stripper pose with it. Good stuff... I mean, what other sport's championship trophy has stories that can even hold a candle to these? NONE!

Re: Stanley Cup history

The 1987 Oilers were incredible. Who could forget Glenn Anderson's break-away goal to secure the Stanley Cup? They just swept right past Ron Hextall in Game Seven to win the series so that Gretzky could hoist the cup. By the way, this was Wayne Gretzky's last season with the Oilers because they completed "The Move" which shipped him to Sacramento a year later!

Cool Re: Stanley Cup history

Great article Lefty. I never knew that Gillies let a dog drink from the cup.

Re: Stanley Cup history

I read where Corey Stillman was very eager to bring it home to Peterborough - and then the big flood happened, and they told him not to come.
Him and Scott Stevens have cottages on the same lake, so Stevens brought it by for Stillman to admire it, after the Devils won, telling Stillman he should be happy to get this close.
Then the Lightning won. So Stillman brought it over to Stevens' cottage, but he wasn't there (probably hiding).
Stillman eventually got it to Peterborough.
What's so great about how they get it for a day is they most always bring it home. It's all about how proud they want to make Mom and Dad.
