Faulk To Retire

It was almost a foregone conclusion last year, when he underwent additional knee surgery and informed the Rams he would not play in 2006, that Marshall Faulk had played his final football game in the National Football League.

On Monday, it will become official. According to multiple sources, Faulk plans to announce his retirement Monday at the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix, where he will be working as an analyst for the NFL Network.

Faulk, who turned 34 last month, has been coy about the possibility of returning to the NFL in 2007 in various interviews this offseason.

He was out injured all of last year, and did some broadcasting, but was contemplating a comeback this season. Apparently decided against it, though. What is Martin's status right now? Is he still under contract with the Jets?

I think he is, but I'm not sure. In 2002, he signed an 8 year extension. But they did redo his deal last year, so I'm not 100% sure.

This is the story from last year:

Quote:
The New York Jets renegotiated Curtis Martin's contract last week to cover themselves in the event Martin does not play this season, the New York Daily News reported Tuesday.

Martin, who was scheduled to earn $2.5 million in base salary for 2006, signed a "split" contract that reduced his salary to a veteran-minimum $810,000, the newspaper reported. If he's placed on season-ending injured reserve, he will receive $475,000.

The move, along with the Jets' trade for San Francisco 49ers runing back Kevan Barlow, is being seen as a sign the team is preparing for a season without Martin.

Martin, 33, the NFL's fourth all-time leading rusher, has a bone-on-bone condition in his surgically-repaired right knee and has yet to practice in training camp, raising fears his career may be over.

Rams' Faulk Set to Announce Retirement
The Casper Star Tribune, WY - 5 hours ago
ST. LOUIS - Marshall Faulk sat out last season with a knee injury that threatened to end his career. He'll officially close the door on his playing days on Monday when he announces his retirement at the NFL owners meetings.

Faulk was the NFL MVP in 2000 and offensive player of the year three years running from 1999-2001. The 34-year-old helped the Rams win their only Super Bowl after the '99 season. He is ninth on the career rushing list with 12,279 yards and tied for sixth with 100 rushing touchdowns.

"He was great for St. Louis, he was great for the Rams and he made the dome an exciting place to be on Sunday," team spokesman Rick Smith said. "But it was just a matter of when he would retire."
