Morning Briefing '79 Rams have the last word
Myrtle Beach Sun News, SC - 3 hours ago
The record book shows that the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, 16-7.

This was shocking news then, and apparently still is at ESPN.com, which rated the 1968 Colts 36th and the 1968 Jets 49th in its ratings of the first 80 Super Bowl teams.

The website lists the Joe Montana-Jerry Rice 1989 San Francisco 49ers, 55-10 winners over Denver, as the greatest Super Bowl team.

Runners-up are the 1985 Chicago Bears, followed by a 1978 Pittsburgh Steelers team that beat Dallas, 35-31, on a dropped pass in the end zone by Cowboys tight end Jackie Smith.

And bringing up the rear at No. 80?

Would you believe the 1979 Los Angeles Rams, who threw a mighty fright into the vaunted Steelers (ranked 16th), taking the lead into the fourth quarter of an eventual 31-19 defeat?

Those Rams were 9-7 in the regular season, the worst record of any Super Bowl participant. But were they really worse than the 2000 New York Giants, who lost by 27 points to a team quarterbacked by Trent Dilfer?

Or the 1985 New England Patriots, whose starting quarterback, Tony Eason, did not complete a pass in a 46-10 loss to the Bears?

Or the 1982 Miami Dolphins, who were quarterbacked by David Woodley, who was four for 14 in a 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins?

Once again, Los Angeles is the victim of East Coast media bias. The only L.A. team to win a Super Bowl, the 1983 Raiders, are ranked 27th, behind two Super Bowl losers, the 2001 St. Louis Rams (No. 23) and the 1978 Cowboys (No. 19).

Re: 1979 Rams Worst Super Bowl Team Ever?

No way the '79 Rams were the worst in my book. I'd have to go with the '00 Giants. That was just ugly.

What the heck are the '78 Boys rated that low?...that was one heck of a team...that barely lost to the Steelers (Jackie Smith anyone?)...they had basically the same core as the 1977 team that won the Super Bowl...

Cool Re: 1979 Rams Worst Super Bowl Team?

I would say the '85 Patriots but I couldn't kill the choice of the 2000 Giants. But the 1982 David Woodley Dolphins were favored in the game over the Skins.

That Rams team had a good defense. The 2000 Giants are a good choice as the worst.

Re: 1979 Rams Worst Super Bowl Team?

So the ESPN football "experts" say that the 1979 Los Angeles Rams are the worst team ever to play in the Super Bowl.

I remember a month before Mike Tyson fought Buster Douglas in Japan a poll was done with the boxing "experts" where Tyson rates all-time. 90% of these "experts" said Tyson is the greatest of all-time.

When Roy Jones Jr. was at his peak 2 "experts" that were on the sport reporters show on Espn said Jones would beat a prime Smokin Joe Frazier.

What a great country we live in to be able to make the money these "experts" make to state clueless opinions.

They bring up that the Rams went 9-7 in 1979.

Name me any team that loses 13 starters in the first 5 games. Lose your starting running back and two wide-outs. Have to play your 4th string QB.

Take away Swann, Stallworth,Franco and Bradshaw and let's see what the Steelers record will be.

And I forgot to mention the defense injuries.

So going 9-7 is like going 13-3.

And anyway isn't the playoffs the real measure of a team.

For a defense that was the worst ever to play in a Super Bowl they set a NFL record that might be hard to break.

-7 total yard for an entire game.

Plus they led the league in sacks with 54

Not bad for the worst.

They had to play two teams in the playoffs that beat them by a total of 51-12 in the regular season.

ON THE ROAD.

For Dallas, they created a defensive scheme called the "Quarter". (4 lineman 7 db's).It was so effective that tom landry known for his halftime adjustments couldn't figure it out.

And befuddled Staubach so bad that his last pass he ever threw was to Herb Scott (only trouble with that it was his offensive lineman).

One week later the ram defense turned in another gem shutting down the Bucs in the NFC Championship game.

The bucs only crossed the 50 yard line 2 times for the entire game.

Then in Super Bowl 14, playing one of the greatest teams ever.

With a QB starting his 9th game.

With your hall of fame pass rusher at 60%.

The Rams had the lead in the 4th quarter.

Only a blown assignment by eddie brown coupled with one of the greatest throws in a super bowl by Bradshaw along with the GREATEST catch EVER in a Super Bowl by Stallworth did we lose.

Even with that Rod Perry came within an inch (deflecting that pass) of us winning

We didn't play the 86, 87 and 89 Denver Broncos we played the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Or that vaunted 89 Bengals team.

I got to be honest with you, I was a "expert" too.

Many years ago (too many) Arnold Swartzneggar was on the Mike Douglas show.

At that time he was Mr. Universe.

Mike Douglas ask Arnold what is his plans when he retires from body building tournaments.

In a very thick accent he said "I want to be a actor".

I start laughing and said "dude, you won't make dime one in being an actor."

The difference in my "expert" opinion and Espn "expert" opinion is they get paid for being an idiot, I didn't get dime one.

I don't remember a lot of the other teams, but the 85 patriots really sticks out in my mind. It was one of the most one sided games I have ever seen. They were completely dominated on both sides of the ball.

85 pats weren't that bad...they jsut had to play the 85 Bears...I would put the 86 Pats against the 79 Rams...

Re: 1979 Rams Worst Super Bowl Team?

Those playoff games in the 70's against the Dallas Cowboys were wars. And the 1976 playoff game between the Cowboys and Rams was one of the greatest games ever.

I use to hate the Cowboys now I miss them.
