Rams vs. Vikings

The St. Louis Rams are longshots, but they are still eligible for the NFC playoffs. If the Rams beat the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, and the Giants, Panthers and Falcons all lose or tie, then they will be headed for the postseason. First things first, though: can they beat Minnesota?

Linehan and St. Louis Rams face unexpected shot at the post-season
CBC News, Canada - 10 hours ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) - Coach Scott Linehan thought three weeks ago his first year in St. Louis would end after the regular season. Now, the Rams need four pieces of the playoff puzzle to fall into place to earn a spot in the post-season.

"It's very nice to be playing for the playoffs at this point in the season," he said. "Especially after being 5-8 three weeks ago."

St. Louis must defeat Minnesota on Sunday, plus have Carolina, Atlanta and the New York Giants lose to earn an NFC wild-card spot.

If the Rams tie the Vikings, they would also need Green Bay to end the regular season with a loss. Like St. Louis, all four teams that affect the Rams' playoff chances also play on the road: New York at Washington, Carolina at New Orleans, Atlanta at Philadelphia and Green Bay at Chicago.

Linehan's return highlights Rams-Vikings meeting at Metrodome

MINNEAPOLIS - Scoring points wasn't always a problem for the Minnesota Vikings. Scott Linehan could vouch for that.

The offensive coordinator in Minnesota from 2002-04, Linehan now has his own show to run as head coach of the St. Louis Rams. His return to the Metrodome on the final Sunday of the regular season, however, will surely remind many frustrated Vikings fans what they have missed since Linehan left.

The Rams (7- have shown their share of flaws in Linehan's first year, and his is certainly not the only notable absence from Minnesota's ailing offense. But whatever the reasons, St. Louis has overcome some rough games and maintained that familiar success moving the ball. It's kept the Rams in the playoff race despite their record.

The Vikings (6-9), meanwhile, have struggled mightily in their first season playing for coach Brad Childress.

"I think there is an expectation level. You know, there have been some great offenses that have come out of both organizations," said Linehan, who was also the offensive coordinator for the Miami Dolphins in 2005. "But ... coaches, players, they change. You've got to go with what you've got. It's no different here. We're seven years out of a Super Bowl victory here. There are a lot of good memories there, but we're not there right now. We're trying to get back to that."
