Look Who's In the Chase

Well now, look who's in the Chase after Atlanta:
  1. KevinHarvick
  2. Matt Kenseth
  3. Greg Biffle
  4. Jimmie Johnson
  5. Clint Boyer
  6. Jeff Burton
  7. Mark Martin
  8. Tony Stewart
  9. Paul Menard
  10. Kurt Busch
  11. Jeff Gordon
  12. Scott Speed
Where's Junior, Kasey, Kyle, Vickers, Newman, Reutimann, Edwards, Montoya, Hamlin?

Are Paul and Scott really that good, or is this just a fluke?

Re: Look Who's In the Chase

Kasey's on his way those 2 crashes set him back but the last 2 weeks he's climbed to 17th, got to say though who expected Menard to be the best RPM car so far

Re: Look Who's In the Chase

I don't know if they're "That good," or if the usual suspects have just been that inconsistent. I think both teams would consider the year a success if they end the season in the top 20. The top 15 would be marvelous and a spot in the playoffs would be a total surprise.

After race #26 I look for Speed, Menard and possibly Burton to be out of the playoffs and Kasey, Shrubby, Juan Pablo and Denny fighting over the open spots.

I'd love to see a bunch of fresh faces in the chase, anybody but Jimmy Johnson. I think the surprise would be if Junior makes it, which I have a sneaking suspicion is going to happen this year.

What I'm afraid of with Junior is that he'd be like a dog chasing a car; what's he going to do with it if he catches it?

Funny, but true. It's been a long time since he's been a serious contender. Last time was in 2004, and guess who ended his run for the championship...

Re: Look Who's In the Chase

I tend to think that Speed COULD be that good. His racing style and skill set is so similar to Kyle Busch in my opinion, which is always welcome, but playing second fiddle to Vickers, it remains to be seen. I imagine kids being at the bottom of the team totem pole from the start would take more time to break through, and this is only the beginning of his second full season.

My guess is, if he starts consistantly outrunning Vickers, watch out because he may be headed to victory lane soon after. The Chase I don't think is in the cards though.

Re: Look Who's In the Chase

I'm sure you coulda taken a number of different 4 race samples from last season and you'd have some 'surprises' in who would have been top 12 over that period. Remember at this time last season Mark Martin was barely inside the top 35, and he ended up finishing 2nd in points...so take the first 4 races for what you will.

This new rule with 3 shots at the GWC has definitely put a wrinkle into the standings as well. Lotsa free passes going on late in the race turning some lousy days into decent points days after a few of the lead lap cars (especially the ones that usually find themselves in the top 10) get wrecked and you get a lucky dog and/or a wave around.

He ran well to start his first year at Hendrick (wasn't he 3rd in the standings prior to the Chase?)...but he's been crap since race 27 of that season.

Menard won't be in the top 20 and Speed won't be in the top 15 when the Chase comes around.

Re: Look Who's In the Chase

Last year after Atlanta the standings were:

1 Jeff Gordon
2 Clint Bowyer
3 Kurt Busch
4 Carl Edwards
5 Matt Kenseth
6 Tony Stewart
7 Kyle Busch
8 Kevin Harvick
9 Kasey Kahne
10 Greg Biffle
11 Brian Vickers
12 David Reutimann

4 of those drivers missed the Chase. Trying to get a Chase picture this early in the year is something I let the talking heads on TV do, but I can't be bothered. Daytona is a crap shoot to begin with, so you always wind up with random guys placing higher than they should have for the first few weeks. Hell, last year we left Daytona with Allmendinger in 3rd in points, Sadler and Regan in 5th and 6th, Michael Waltrip in 8th, and Sorenson in 10th. Waltrip was in the top 12 for the first 3 weeks. Then the universe returned to normal, and things got a little better.
