Martin, Stewart find themselves on the bubble

Martin, Stewart find themselves on the bubble

SCENEDAILY - 11:12AM ET SUNDAY AUGUST 27, 2006 - BY BOB POCKRASS - ASSOCIATE EDITOR

BRISTOL, Tenn. - Mark Martin and Tony Stewart are veterans of championship battles, and they will have to hope that their experience helps them over the next couple of weeks.
Martin dropped from fourth to 10th in the NASCAR Nextel Cup standings following the Sharpie 500 Saturday at Bristol Motor Speedway. Stewart, the defending series champion, dropped from fifth to eighth.
Martin is still 90 points ahead of 11th-place Kasey Kahne while Stewart has a 97-point cushion with two races remaining before the Chase cutoff. They have little momentum heading into California next week while ninth-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. (92 points ahead of Kahne) will be riding the momentum of a third-place finish.
For Stewart, the problem was a bad car resulting in a bad race. Stewart settled for 22nd in the Sharpie 500.
Pitting outside his box early in the race and never recovering while also having contact with Scott Wimmer, Martin finished 28th at Bristol.
"It wasn't our night," Martin said. "I've got to take the blame for that one. ... I did the best I could."
Martin entered this season expecting it to be his last as a full-time driver on the Nextel Cup circuit.
"He's got 90 points over Kasey Kahne in 11th, but, certainly, we're in jeopardy there," Roush said, latter adding, "It will be one of the biggest disappointments in my life - not just my racing life - but my life generally if we're not able to see Mark compete for this championship in what will likely be his last full year in Nextel Cup racing.
"Having said that, we'll soldier on with whatever we can."
As the pressure heats up to get into the Chase, there also is still pressure on Roush to figure out what to do with Martin next season.
"I haven't given up on the fact that we can get him back in one of the Roush cars next year," Roush said.

I like Martin and I'd love him in. I could care less about Stewart either way.

No contest- Gordon out and Kahne in.
Of course, if the 24 didn't make it, France & Company would have to make serious changes to the Chase format in order to ensure that Jeffy can make it in from now on.
Same can be said for the 8 car. I firmly believe that even the people who don't like the 24 and the 8 should be glad that both cars look like they will make it into the Chase...as what may happen if one or both don't make it could be just as bad as them being in.

Too late... Oh France is changing it next year. That's already been reported. So them not making it last year has already doomed next year.

I can see Kasey Khane in there but i think Boyer is gonna have to wait 1 or 2 years cause if he even did get in it would be like Jeremy Mayfield. Get in 2 years in a row and dont do anything with it. I think he gets the gout the last 10 races and cant push the right pedal hard enough.
