We all know Jr has the most fans but I wonder who is #2?

My understanding is that many folks who root for Jnr do so because of the memory of his father, rather than them actually thinking that he is worth supporting in his own right.

So, this thread could have been entitled "Who REALLY has the most fans?"

ha ha ha... yeah but, Rusty has been losing fans left and right since he picked up a microphone... The Rusty fans had no-one to go to when he quit, they put Kurt in the car...and a big difference, Rusty still lives. I know several Rusty fans who now live listless lives, no remaining passion for racing. just lost souls who cannot seem to find their way back to na$car.... perhaps they are the lucky ones, not witnessing what we call Na$car today. Maybe they can be Carl Edwards fans.... he flips in a ford pretty good. ok sorry just a momentary lack of restraint.

To answer your question...

Based on the over priced stuff I see kids wearing and the stickers I see on cars, I guess it's pretty much a toss up between Jimmy, Jeffie-Pooh, Smoke and Shrub. I think that out of those four who is second would depend a lot on who got the most media attention the past week because there are a significant number of driver fans out there who are quite fickle with their choices and go where the best chance is for them to beat their chest in front of others stating proudly, "<Insert driver>'s MY driver and he WON!!!" (Witness the number of Master Joey fans who quickly put Logano, or some variant thereof, in their screen names as the season started but since Master Joey hasn't made much noise lately his presence has all but disappeared)

But, I could be very wrong...

Who has the 2nd most fans? I suppose one way to look at it is...it depends upon if you count both the fans who cheer a driver and the fans who boo the same driver. If you combine the two, you'd probably come up with a closer answer than who sells the most merchandise, or who wins the Most Popular Farse Contest. So if you go by that, right now I'd say Kyle Busch is 2nd. But then, I remember someone saying if half the stands are there cheering you, and half the stands are there booing you, then they're all there to see you, or something to that effect.

Gotta tell ya Roady that I've never cared a lot about Rusty. He was a whiner (from my perspective). Not a bad driver for his era but just a crybaby. There are/were drivers I liked a lot less than him but he is in the running on my list.

Nobody wants to hear this but...

Most of the drivers that we think of as good/great/above average now were not very popular and in fact were routinely boo'd etc...early in their career.

People like Dale Sr., Darrel Waltrip etc....

Dale Sr. wasnt' always the intimidator. Early in his career people talked about him as a loose cannon and a young punk. How the passage of times makes us forget lol. DW was really disliked till his run in with Rusty.
