Shelmerdine plans to attempt all Cup races

Shelmerdine plans to attempt all Cup races: hearing Kirk Shelmerdine and several partners have bought some of the Toyotas campaigned last year by #22 Bill Davis Racing and are trying to put a plan in place to run all the Sprint Cup races. Bill Davis Racing was bought by Triad Racing Technologies and supposedly they will not run any races in 2009.(1-21-2009)

Here is my plan. I "PLAN" to attempt to attend all cup races this year. I believe Kirk and I will be equal in the success department.

he's already ahead of you .. he'll be at Daytona .. just don't know if he'll make the field.

so, ya gonna attempt Daytona? (I know, I know .. with all that snow and the fact they don't put skis on airliners....)

I, on the other hand, am gonna put forth a very serious effort to NOT make any Cup or NWS race this year. In fact, I'm gonna try every way possible to be in my recliner during those races .. whether the TV is on or not.

Re: Shelmerdine plans to attempt all Cup races

I don't blame Shelmerdine for giving it the old college try. Last year the lowest money paid for a 500 starter was Kyle Petty who finished 42th and took home $248,050. For a team like Shelmerdine's, if he makes the race, then starts and parks he's made probably half his nut for the entire year.

If NA__AR wants to play the game like that, then I can fault the guy for taking advantage of an opportunity.

I don't blame him either. After all this may be the best chance he has to get in cup. But I really hope he actually races and not just start and park.

I hear you but... Is entering a race just for a start&park spot really "racing?"
I'll give you what Jim Finch did with Joe Ruttman back in 2004? (I think it was) At one race they had 44 entries and Finch's car made 43rd. Race day they showed up with the car and driver, period. No crew, no extra tires, no nothing. Joe took the green flag made the first lap, pulled into the garage and they put it on the trailer by lap ten. To effort whatsoever. To me that isn't racing, it's just collecting money which, as far as I'm concerned was only marginally earned.
That's the kind of thing I fear we're going to see this season, maybe more than once.

Re: Shelmerdine plans to attempt all Cup races

Shelmerdine isn't a start & park racer. He won't be fast, and he'll probably start at the rear of the pack and will be lucky if he's able to keep the draft. He will drop out when his car starts telling him it's getting "tired" 'cause he doesn't have the bucks to rebuild it that the other teams do, so he's gotta be careful not to break it. But, he'll race it as long as he can.

Personally, I think he makes a much better crew chief and setup man than owner/driver and wish he'd go back to what he's good at .. but it's his dream and he's chasing it... Can't fault a guy for that.

You can't fault a guy for trying; but I think that he would do better with a wrench in his hand than a steering wheel. I just don't see a Sprint Cup ride as a real option for him.
