First time posting here. I gotta say that I was fired up when I saw Smoke do that. Tony is not my driver, and this just reinforced why I don't pull for him.

You have to admit though, is this not why we love this sport? We dig the drama, the bumping, tempers flaring. If NASCAR penalized severly any and all acts on the track that they deemed agressive, they would sterilize Nextel cup. Try watching F1 racing, or any open wheel racing. Its not the same. We love to hate!

VT ... one isssue with NA$CAR is that they do not pass out penalties on an equal basis. My other issue is that I don't feel penalties are severe enough !! The one who causes another driver to go to the pits for reapirs get a 1 lap penalty while the innocent guy gets to stay in the pits until the car is fixed. Can easily be 20 or more laps or possibly put out of the race. What did the 1 lap penalty do to Tony ??? He ended up in the top 10. Edwards was about 3 laps down ... and yes I know at least one of those laps was a penalty lap. Where is the justice there ?????

I hear ya LSC9901, maybe two laps or three would have been a more painful penalty. Try and put yourself into Frances' shoes. Penalties too harsh would risk taking them out of the chase.
I'm a Gordon fan, , so I took heavy flak last week from my buddies. They were livid over the 'bump and run'. I told them that its part of racing, we all like it when its our driver, and hate it when its not. I also mentioned that next race someone else will put the bumper to another car next week, lo and behold Smoke was the one. Two weeks from now, I'm sure that we'll see more. Thats part of the reason I waste perfectly good Sunday afternoons glued to the tube!

Let me add to my previous post. I love racing, all forms. I enjoy first and foremost the competiveness. I am more into MotoGP than NASCAR. In MotoGP, there is little or no bumping. At best shoulder rubbing/leaning on each other. Bumping is a part of NASCAR, nascar could easily do away with it by making the radiator and other critical parts vulnerable to damage when bumping. A driver would think twice about the bump if it meant ruining his run.

VT .. I hear you but my view is that France needs to worry less about who gets in the chase. The good drivers will make the chase. My question is how far are they going to allow this aggression to go before they do something real. You say that a more harsh penalty might take Tony out of the chase ..... what did Tony do to two other drivers ???? I've stated it before nd will once again for your sake. If Edwards was to have spent 20 laps in the pits getting repaired then Tony should have spent 20 plus a penalty on top of that. Being the great driver he is he was able to make up the one lap penalty. The poor schnook that has to get a lot of repair work because he was an innocent bystander gets the shaft for no good reason. I don't care if it is Tony this week or that it was Tony at Daytona. If it is one of the drivers I like then he should come under the gun also. ANY driver that causes an innocent driver to lose laps should lose the same amount plus a penalty on top of that. Right now I see no real penalties imposed by NA$CAR. It would be interesting to see how many of the 1 lap penalties have been overcome over the course of the race. That would be a better perspective of just how effective the penalty really is.

Good points, all the way around LSC9901, hard to argue with you. You have a point about the 99 car being taken out, and having nothing to do with it. No other driver has retaliated as blatantly as Tony. The hard part sometimes is defining who is 'innocent' sometimes. Edwards is clearly innocent, but can we say the same for Bowyer? This incident was a carbon copy of Smoke pushing into Kenseth this spring. Anger management a real issue here.

I guess I was having issues with many of the guys I work with that are Stewart fans. They gave me flak last week for Gordons' bump on Kenseth. Kind of hipocritical!

Why are you trying to compare Earnhardt with Stewart?? Earnhardt was a leader, Stewrat isn't. He has lost SOOO much respect in the garage. Earnhardt didn't take guys out, he scared them and occasionaly moved them out of the way, Stewrat just completely recks guys, his reckless.

Your point is well taken but if you were to study Tony a little deeper you'd find that, given the chance, Tony would be a leader as Earnhardt was. All of the drivers are looking for someone to step up and fill in the role of leader of the drivers. A voice that NA$CAR will listen to. Someone they can all go to when problems arise. He has come close to filling that role but it just isn't going to happen for him. He is not a good representative of the championship itself. He is not real good with the public plus his problems on the track magnify his inadequacies from the point of view of the fans and the corporate sponsors. How often do you pick up your local newspaper and read about the guy that went across the street and cut the little old widows grass without being asked and expected nothing in return ??? Probably never. Let that same guy make one error and the media is all over it, him, his past, his family and everything else about him. The same has happened with Tony. His mistakes are magnified by the media. How many replays of the incident have you seen so far ???? How many times did the media talk about the driver who ran in 37th place most of the day. Good news isn't news. Bad news sells.

I believe that Tony could give Dale Sr. a run for his money, but we'll never know. Stewart is one of the best drivers on the circuit today. I, personally, do not like him for all the reasons I've noted so many times before. Anger and aggression together make for a bad story. He may never be able to change his image. First off he must try !!

Last but not least I'm not sure how many times you saw Dale Sr. race but he did more than just move drivers on occassion. His death may have brought him more respect than what he had when he was alive. Just my opinion.
