Ever look at all the awards given at a single race?

Ripped this off of Jayski site. Just for one race. You never hear about them much. But some of them give cash bonuses and that's why you see drivers further back in the points with a higher money total for the year than someone way ahead of them.

DIRECTV Crew Chief of the Race : Tony Stewart, #20
DOW Automotive Strategic Call of the Race : Jimmie Johnson, #48
EA Sports Move of the Race : Jimmie Johnson, #48
Goodyear Gatorback Fastest Lap : Kyle Busch, #18 (120.849 mph, Lap 2)
Mahle Clevite Engine Builder : Jimmie Johnson, #48
Mobil 1 Command Performance Driver of the Race : David Reutimann, #44
Moog Chassis Parts Problem Solver of the Race : David Reutimann, #44 (-.48 seconds)
Raybestos Rookie of the Race : Michael McDowell, #00
Sunoco Diamond Performance : Jimmie Johnson, #48
USG Improving the Finish : David Reutimann, #44 (18 Places)
WIX Lap Leader : David Reutimann, #44 (104 Laps)

Forgive me, but I find this downright ridiculous.

I think it is OK. There are incentives there for the teams to do well in the shop so that they can enjoy the fruits of their labors. I don't know for sure but I would suspect all series have something similar to this.

What sucks is that during driver intros, they give the drivers those checks, and pause to take pics! They award the previous races awards like that at the next weeks race. Ends up taking about 30 minutes to intro the drivers!

There's that but the main reason is the Owner points standing. Remove the top 3 driver and the pay list is close to a match with that standing.

I never really expected that response. Why is it ridiculous? A sponsor puts in XXX amount of money they should be able to give out an award to a driver.

So by the same token we shouldn't give out MVP of football games since they are all sponsored now or play of the game awards since they are sponsored as well?

There's that, but there's a lot more to it than owner points. It also depends in what you participate to get those points. Some races pay more. IE...

15--Brian Vickers2854-2226261036 2,778,840

16--Ryan Newman2853-2227261128 4,991,280

That last number is money earned this year. Ryan Newman won the Daytona 500 and is $2 million ahead of Brian Vickers even tho he is behind him in points. A lot of that money comes from contengency programs and Daytona pays more for each individual contigency than any other race for the simple fact that car gets more press and then winds up in a museum for a year for people to see with the contingency stickers on them.

Look at Kenny Wallace. He's #66 in owner points, has 1 start this year (yes 1 start in cup). He's earned more money than the next 6 points people COMBINED. You have to go up 13 spots to find someone who has as much earnings as him and they have 4 starts as opposed to 1...but Kenny Wallace started the Daytona 500 - a $250,000 payout just to start. Ken Schraeder has 7 more starts and only 3 times the earnings.......

Plus throw in if they ran in the Bud Shootout and All Star race etc....Kasey Khane is right up with the top earners this year so far and didn't make the chase (In fact he's 4th in earnings).

Then there are the goofy stuff that nobody can clearly explain. The NASCAR bonus programs based on how many starts you had the PREVIOUS year and how well you placed.

I give you this example

26--David Gilliland2364-2716260012 2,910,810

27+1Mark Martin2270-2810180039 2,773,280

Mark Martin has 18 starts as opposed to Gillilands 26 starts and has a personal earnings (not car earnings) of nearly the same.

I know it. They just show drivers prancing across the stage!

They don't do all of em, but they do the leading rookie, most laps led, hard charger award (most cars passed).

Ends up being around 6-8 extra's thrown in!

Yeah... same way in the truck and Busch series..... you just don't see it unless your at the track.

I don't mind some of em. But after a while it gets tiresome.

But I understand them doing it. It's PR for the company that sponsors it, and it is fair to all winners to get some extra time!

Especially when the winners of those awards don't do that much in the race to get recognized.
