Return of Southern 500 name

Accoring to ESPN's NASCAR Now, next year's Darlington race will be called the Southern 500. It won't get the Labor Day date back. Just the name. I was happy. NASCAR made a decision that everyone was hoping for.

It doesn't matter.... it's just a name!!! What was important was running Darlington & The Southern "400" (They won't run a 500 at Darlington now) during labor day weekend.
They shouldn't rename the Darlington race the "Southern" if they aren't gonna run it labor day!

Can I get an "AMEN!!!", Brother Loco? Well said.

It will NEVER be The Southern 500 (or 400) unless they run it at Darlington on Labour Day.

Okay, I understand that y'all want it back on Labor Day, but...
This is a small victory, isn't it? A step back towards the ideal set-up for this race? Isn't there some joy to be found in that?

For the past few years this race was sponsored by Dodge but Dodge dropped it due to cutbacks. The race didn't have a sponsor so they decided to call it the southern.... This will last until they find another sponsor....OR it will be called something like coca-cola presents the southern 400.
For me personally, I don't care what they call it, I'd trade the name for the labor day date.

Why is it "A victory?" They still don't have a second race at Darlington. They just swapped dates between that thing they call a track in Fontana and Atlanta.

Personally I see no rationale at all to think of this as any kind of a victory for race fans.

I look at as more of a diversion NA__AR has thrown at the fans to make them think they won something, because they believe, at the bottom of their hearts that we fans are just a bunch of gullible yahoos. Just because it's run at Atlanta does NOT make it the Southern 500. (or 400 or whatever) It's just a race run over the Labour Day weekend.

That was exactly my first impression, NASCAR is trying to pull a fast one on us hoping we'll blink.

Too little too late, too much like trying to cash in on a past name for the sake of money with no substance attached to it.

Yeah.
(1) They take away the Labour Day race, which has been a NASCAR tradition since 9/4/1950! FYI, that inaugural race was called "The Southern 500.

To add insult to injury they move the race on Labour Day to a track which has, since its inception, offered no discernable racing.

(2) Now they are on the verge of making an announcement that they are moving the Labour Day date back to the South by swapping the Atlanta and California Labour Day race dates.

(3) Now they magnanimously announce that they will now call the spring Darlington date the "Southern 500?" To quote The Church Lady, "Well, isn't THAT special?"

NA__AR, is your name was Charlie and you were a tuna you would never make it into the Starkist can! This probably seems like a good idea to the new fans you've managed to garner. However, speaking only for myself but I suspect I'm not alone, it is a slap in the face to long time NASCAR (not NA__AR) fans. We're being played for fools and I, for one, am offended. No, scratch that. I'm not offended. I'm just plain mad.

Sorry lefty. I don't see any sort of victory in a name change that happened only because there was lack of support for title sponsorship. The only way NASCAR can ever make up for the terrible thing they did to our lady in black is run at her place on Labor Day.

I know, a simple date doesn't seem like it should be a big deal either, but it ended turning into one many years ago. It's just like if NASCAR were to say the Daytona 500 is to be run in November, and we open the season at Chicago. You could call anything you want, but it wouldn't be the Daytona 500 in November. It's a downright travesty.
