Labonte still hurting from hard crash

Bobby Labonte is shaking off the effects of Sunday's hard crash at Watkins Glen. "I'm probably as guilty as anyone of not giving NASCAR enough credit for all of the safety initiatives they have introduced to our sport in the last five years," Labonte said. "I'll tell you, all it takes is to be involved in an accident like we had at the end of the race at Watkins Glen to send you a reminder. "There is no doubt this is the safest race car in the world. We don't think of road courses as places where hard wrecks like that can occur. But everything in the car worked like it was designed to do. "I appreciate NASCAR bringing safety to the forefront and keeping it there." -- Winston-Salem Journal

Re: Labonte still hurting from hard crash

After the ride he took in that car he should know how safe it really is. I thought he was going to be really hurt when I saw him get out of the car.

Just glad he is okay. I really like him.

Re: Labonte still hurting from hard crash

Does anybody know what injury he sustained?
He looked like hw was in a world of hurt.
He looked like he was in such shock that he could have obtained a serious injury and not even realize it. I was expecting him to suddenly fall to the ground as he was walking away from his car.

For all the slack Kyle Busch took during Richmond when he and Earnhardt mixed it up I can't believe I haven't heard more about McDowell slamming Gilliland into the wall at the curve. McDowell destroys 8 - 9 cars, shuts the race down for an hour to fix the track, drivers are injured and I haven't really heard a peep from anybody about him being a villian, evil incarnate or anything. Am I missing something?

The initial report after the race said he was complaining of rib and abdominal pain. He probably got bounced around in the seat and the seat bolsters around the rib cage left him badly bruised and out of breath. Later reports said he was not injured (meaning nothing broken or necessitating a recovery period).
