NASCAR busts Jeremy Mayfield's Dodge in post-race inspection

By JIM UTTER
The Charlotte Observer

CONCORD, N.C. - The No. 19 Dodge of Nextel Cup Series driver Jeremy Mayfield failed post-race inspection following Sunday night's Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, series director John Darby confirmed Tuesday.
The car's roof height failed to meet the minimum 51-inch requirement, Darby said.
NASCAR officials did not report the incident to media members at the track, which has been the practice. The incident was first brought up during Tuesday's "Car of Tomorrow" test by NASCAR's vice president of competition, Robin Pemberton.
The infraction is expected to draw a significant monetary fine and points penalty when the official penalty is released, likely on Wednesday. Fines ranging from $25,000 to $35,000 and 25-point penalties have been used most recently for the same infraction. Mayfield, who had one of the stronger cars during most of the race weekend and qualified second, finished 15th.

Lord I feel so bad for him. After all the bad luck looked like It was going to get better.

Any idea what the actual measurement was ??? This is why winners no longer jump on the roofs of their cars. It would lower the vehicle and make it fail the post race inspection.

Meanwhile it is OK to run someone off the track but don't let your car be a 16th of an inch to close to the ground !!!

Sounds like it was "Knaus'd"! Thats what happened to the 48 last year at Las Vegas after Johnson won the race.

how long is mayfields contract, Iam wondering how long he will be in that car. I like JM wouldn't mind seeing him at RCR in a forth car.

JUSTICE DELAYED NASCAR typically issues penalties on Tuesday, but today they delayed action on possible sanctions for both Kyle Busch and the Evernham Motorsports No. 19 Dodge driven by Jeremy Mayfield. Busch, who drew NASCAR’s ire earlier this year at Phoenix for ramming Casey Mears’ car during a red flag, threw his HANS device at Mears after the two collided Sunday night in the Coca-Cola 600. Mayfield’s car failed the postrace inspection in the same race when it came up one-eighth of an inch too low in the roof height measurement test. “The way we run these cars now, it beats these springs to death and they settle and you never know how much,” said team owner Ray Evernham. “They were low, no doubt about it. … The front springs gave up. It settled too much.” Mayfield finished 15th in the race.

Bummer Kyle should of loss more points then 25. 25 for the throw & 25 for resisting an official. Don't seem right to me.

Wellll Gma, geez, who does the 5 drive for. 50 points would have been ideal but 25 points seems to be the norm. Have they ever taken more than 25 points? Anyone know? But I concur, should have been more points.

This is the stuff I don't quite understand. Did the vehicle pass the pre race inspection ???? and if so then what is the reason, according to NASCAR that it is now lower???? With all the officials around it would seem very difficult to lower the car without being noticed by someone. B U L L C R A P !!!!!

Re: NASCAR Busts Jeremy

Some Owner's and Driver's seem to get hit harder then those that have really pushed the limit. Look what they did to Jr for saying s--t, from toddlers up I hear worse. I don't get it I don't know if anyone has loss more then 25 points. I know someone that should have.
