As far as the NASCAR and NA__AR fans go... stock car racing is, by nature, a violent sport. As much as the media and the "neo-fans" would like it to be other wise, NASCAR is NOT a team sport. It's performed by individuals, aided by others. Add to this the fact that long-time NASCAR fans have been kind of maligned by the media and other sports. This neglect has driven many of us to take our sport a bit more seriously than other sport followers. Also the fact that, by its design, NASCAR is a personality-driven sport. Mix all this together and, I guess, you have a breeding ground for fanaticism.

| Re: Shrub Trashes Fans There's always a cycle. JPM was in the bucket for a while, JJ, Jeff ... now Kyle. I have no problem bashing the drivers/teams. It just isn't acceptable when one poster finds another posters opinions objectionable and airs the complaints publicly. Can't understand why they just don't avoid the subject ??????? |

| Re: Shrub Trashes Fans I think that it may have something to do with the more "mature" members trying to educate the "kids" about social behavior and respect. Maybe unwarranted attacks need to be kept in check by the Mods as well, so a public Forum doesn't turn into a festering ground of negative perception about a single sport figure by cyber misfits. It's funny how the "rules" allow for continued mindless "driver" bashing, but I suppose it's just part of the Forum's program to attract newer and younger participants. There is something Nascar about that.

| Re: Shrub Trashes Fans I'm going on a bit of a soapbox here, so beware... Bashing... There is bashing and then there is "bashing." I've been on, and kicked off, forums (AOL Grandstand - NASCAR, to be specific on the one which sticks in my craw) where anything opinion differing with the forum moderators, or moderator's "pets" was considered "bashing" and therefore gained one immediate expulsion. The forum was a haven for DW and Mikey fans so you can imagine how long The Bobster lasted. Personally I have no problem with bashing IF the basher gives examples of why they have developed a dislike for the object of their wrath. They don't even have to be good or even logical reasons. There was, a couple of years ago, a member here who, along with a couple of friends have gone on to other venues, who disliked idolized Kasey Kahne but abhorred Robby Gordon. I pressed her for a reason almost to the point of harassment but the best I could get out of her was, "I don't know why, I just hate him." Not much of a reason but, for her a reason, I guess. Personally, I'd just like something so that those of us who wish to discuss the matter can have a frame of reference. What I DO have a problem with is the "drive-by" bashers. You've all seen them. The one's whose best attempt at eloquence is "I hate [insert driver, team, car make, NA__AR official, whatever]. He/she SUX!" Or the ever popular "[insert driver]'s queer!" People who have nothing better to offer than this should, IMNSVHO, be required to take some sort of intelligence test before being allowed to log onto the net. I also think "Hate" and "Love" are bandied about way too much. These are pretty intense emotions, usually reserved for someone a person is intimately familiar with. As much as I dislike The Felon, I think everyone here would be very hard pressed to fine a single example of my stating "I hate him." OK, soapbox mode <off> |
