Many NASCAR teams, even the top ones, admit that their official Web site has been treated as a necessary evil in the past. Teams generally don't have the staff or know-how to keep the content relevant and it brings little to no return. But those attitudes are changing. Most of the leading NASCAR teams -- Roush Fenway Racing, Joe Gibbs Racing, Penske Racing and Chip Ganassi Racing -- have relaunched their sites in the last few months, and Hendrick Motorsports is working on a relaunch for June. While these teams agree that their Web offerings deserve a higher priority, their reasons for putting more resources into them vary. Some teams are looking for more ways to monetize their sites, while others want to create fan communities and as a by-product capture consumer data for sponsors.
