NASCAR Teams Watching TV Broadcast

ive been wondering ...... (shut up Q)

we have the thread about teams listening to scanners in the pits during races to see what other teams are doing

what about NASCAR teams watching the TV broadcast during the race ?

im sure there are plenty of people that go to a race weekend to tailgate and party then watch the race from the comfort of a hotel room or RV ..... i have actually done this at races

do the teams have someone doing the same thing ?

they can relay any info they may glean to the crew chief or anyone in the pits via radio or cell phone

what may they glean ? ..... you can see what really happened in a replay .... you may get a much better view during an accident then a spotter which may potentially help your driver navigate .... they could maybe "inspect" the car on the track during a red flag if the camera's spot something ..... they can relay if someone has a 17 second pit stop the team may not be aware of

im sure the list goes on and on .... these are just a few off the top of my head ..... (again ... shut up Q)

seems obvious to me teams would do this ...... im just not sure if they do or not

Re: NASCAR Teams Watching TV Broadcast

Simon, if there is an advantage to doing anything in the pit box area, the NASCAR teams will try it.

The "war wagon," as it's sometimes called, is a giant information center. Most pit boxes are equipped with television monitors, a satellite dish, video cameras, video recorders, computers, and anything the engineers deem necessary. They monitor other teams to figure out what the other teams strategy is. Also the teams monitor the TV broadcast, in-car cameras available through Sprint Nextel and the Weather Channel.

Re: NASCAR Teams Watching TV Broadcast

I wouldnt be surprised at all if they have/hacked into the raw camera feeds of the broadcasters.

I'm sure each NASCAR team has a satellite feed for the race. They may also monitor in car cameras that Sprints sells at the track. With these devices, you can sit in the stands and watch several in car cameras and listen to communication between the driver, spotter and crew chief. If this is available to the fans certainly the teams take advantage of it too.

The crew has the satellite dish in each pit. They have several TV sets and can switch to whatever they need to watch. Some teams have several crew members standing by in the garage area in the event parts are needed that is not in the pits. Those guys can hustle up what is needed quickly.

TV coverage just lets the teams know what going own. NASCAR communicates with each crew chief to let them know when the "green" is about to come out, what position their driver is in after a caution (so the crew chief can tell his driver which car to get behind or which line to get in), advise the team of an infraction or violation etc. I don't think the crew chief can gain much more information under a caution except for a tire going down or a fender pushed in.

Re: NASCAR Teams Watching TV Broadcast

Wasn't it in the Vegas race where a TV replay of a tire coming out of the pit box led to a no-penalty call and helped Carl Edwards win that race? If that doesn't tell everyone that pretty much everyone in the pits is watching TV, then I don't know what will!
