NASCAR Scanners In The Pits

i was just watching a NASCAR report about Darlington on ESPN2 .... they were playing a lot of Biffle's radio traffic from the race

while Biffle was complaining about his car .... you could hear his crew chief tell him he thought Kyle was having brake trouble

now to anyone listening to Kyle's radio chatter you could clearly hear him complaining about his brakes

my question is whether or not the race teams have scanners to listen to other drivers during the race ....... i know i sure would if i had a team

I don't know for a fact but I would suspect that someone on the team has a multi-channel programmable scanner and is busy listening to teams that would have any impact on them at that moment. It's perfectly legal.

I would surely think the same thing. Seems with the stuff being right open the free airwaves, they would be foolish not too.

Re: NASCAR Scanners In The Pits

i heard on kahne's scanner about the fact that when kyle busch got underneath him to put him a lap down, busch would get really loose in 3 and 4 so thats what kasey kept doing and kenny francis saying that kyle was saying that. so i would think it would be legal.

Fairly common that teams will listen in on others to get a feel for how they are running, changes/plans made or being considered, and the results of those changes.

Now since all of the teams know this, not all heard is true, and some communications are "coded" for lack of a better phrase. Now since all teams also know this, it is likely the reason Biffles chief indicated he thought the 18 may have brake issues.

Re: NASCAR Scanners In The Pits

I know a few years ago Roush (I think) was using civilian secure voice scramblers. I believe NA__AR stopped the practice.

Re: NASCAR Scanners In The Pits

Why is this so surprising to anyone. At the track there are scanner rental booths about every 100' and 90% of the fans are wearing headsets. Clearly Nascar has decided that monitoring team radio talk is part of the fan experience. Now bring in the race teams. Monitoring another team's communications is as simple as renting a scanner, but somehow I suspect they can afford to buy their own equipment. Seriously, the radio talk can't be open to the public and banned from the teams. With the money that is being spent, having a team member or team friend [wife, brother, or whatever] relay what is shown or said on tv or other team radios is to be expected and should not be a surprise to anyone. Sometimes I think we get to serious and buy in to the expensive high tech stuff that most of these teams do and then think something is ??'able when the cheap / simple stuff comes up.
